Footprint Statamic Laravel Package

danielgnh/footprint-statamic

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit — Provisional. The package name (footprint-statamic) and publisher (danielgnh) indicate a Statamic addon rather than a general-purpose Laravel package. That distinction matters: Statamic is a Laravel-based CMS distributed over Composer, so addons inherit Laravel service-provider/config/migration conventions, but their usable surface is bound to the Statamic runtime (Antlers templates, the control panel, the content repository, the Stache index). If our target is a plain Laravel application, this is likely not directly consumable; if we run Statamic, fit depends on which subsystem it hooks (tag, modifier, fieldtype, listener) — none of which is documented in this release. Treat fit as unconfirmed pending source/README review.

Integration feasibility — Low confidence today. A v0.1.0 with an empty release body, no changelog detail, and only a diff link gives us nothing to verify against: no stated Laravel/Statamic version constraints, no install instructions, no test matrix, no published API. Feasibility cannot be assessed beyond "installable as a Composer dependency if its composer.json constraints resolve against our lockfile" — a mechanical check we can run in an afternoon.

Technical risk — Elevated, driven by maturity rather than any known defect. A 0.x first tag from an individual maintainer implies an unstable public API (semver permits breaking changes on any minor), no deprecation policy, and unknown production usage. Secondary risk is ecosystem coupling: Statamic addons break on Statamic majors, so we inherit Statamic's upgrade cadence on top of the addon's. Licence and provenance are also unverified. No security or dependency posture can be inferred from an empty release note.

Key questions — (1) Is this a Statamic addon or a Laravel package with a Statamic-flavoured name, and which Statamic/Laravel/PHP versions does it support? (2) What does "footprint" mean here — asset/rendering footprint, storage, or carbon accounting? (3) Who maintains it, and is there evidence of sustained maintenance (commit history, other packages, issue activity)? (4) What is the licence and is it compatible with our distribution model? (5) Is there a test suite or CI? (6) Is this a rename or fork of something already in our dependency tree?

Integration Approach

Stack fit — Conditional. Relevant only if Statamic is already in our stack; a Laravel-only service should treat this as out of scope. If Statamic is in play, confirm control-panel and runtime version alignment before anything else.

Migration path — None implied by v0.1.0. There is no prior version to move from and no existing consumer to retrofit. Establishing this as a candidate means evaluating it as a net-new dependency in a sandboxed resolve spike, not bolting it onto a live feature.

Compatibility — Unverified. Requires reading composer.json for require/require-dev constraints against our PHP and Laravel/Statamic versions. Because it is 0.x, pin the exact version (0.1.0) in any trial; never introduce a floating ^0.1 constraint into a shared lockfile.

Sequencing — (1) Resolve the package in a throwaway branch and capture the full dependency diff. (2) Read source and README to close the key questions above. (3) Run a timeboxed spike behind a feature flag in a non-production environment only. (4) Re-assess at v1.0, or when the maintainer demonstrates sustained commit activity. Do not sequence this ahead of any committed roadmap item.

Operational Impact

Maintenance — Cost sits with us, not a vendor. At 0.x we should assume we may need to fork or vendor the code to absorb a breaking change. Budget for periodic compatibility checks against Statamic majors, which are the more likely breakage source than the addon itself.

Support — No commercial support, no stated SLA, single-maintainer bus factor. Escalation path is a GitHub issue. Acceptable for an internal convenience utility; not acceptable on a customer-facing critical path.

Scaling — Unknown, and for this package class probably not the binding constraint; Statamic addons typically execute at request/render time and inherit the host application's scaling profile. If it does index-time work against the Stache or writes assets, validate the write path and cache invalidation under realistic content volume before relying on it.

Failure modes — Most likely: silent no-op after a Statamic upgrade, boot-time failure from a service provider that no longer satisfies the container, and config-publish drift. Less likely but higher impact: an unmaintained transitive dependency. Mitigations are a pinned version, a boot-time smoke test in CI, and a documented exit plan (vendor the code) agreed before adoption.

Ramp-up — Low for a Laravel/Statamic-fluent engineer: hours, not days. The real cost is decision latency created by the information gaps above — closing those is the prerequisite, not training.
