Laravel Paperclip Laravel Package

czim/laravel-paperclip

Laravel Paperclip attaches files and images to Eloquent models, handling storage, image resizing, and processing through configurable drivers. It offers a Paperclip-style API with variants, conversions, and cleanup, making uploads and attachment management simple and consistent in Laravel apps.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for file attachments. This package replaces the bespoke work that otherwise lands on every team that ships uploads: storage path conventions, filename sanitization, variant/thumbnail generation, and orphan cleanup on model delete. Adopting it is a "borrow" decision — MIT-licensed, no procurement, no seat cost — and the real cost is integration plus ongoing dependency risk, not licensing.
  • Feature scoping for any "one file per record" surface. The package is opinionated toward a single attachment per model attribute, which maps cleanly to avatars, company logos, product hero images, CMS cover images, tenant branding, KYC documents, and expense receipts. That opinion is a feature: it keeps the schema and API simple and avoids the "media collection" abstraction that heavier packages impose.
  • Roadmap sequencing. If an attachment-dependent feature (profile photos, document upload on an application form, receipt capture) is on the near-term roadmap, this lets a small team ship without first investing in a media service, CDN pipeline, or DAM.
  • Data-retention and compliance stories. Automatic file removal on update/delete is directly usable as evidence for GDPR erasure and storage-cost hygiene discussions — cheaper to point at a library behavior than to build and audit it.
  • Convention decisions. For teams with Rails/Paperclip background, it offers a familiar declarative attachment model; for everyone else it is one candidate in a "pick our house standard for media" decision that also includes spatie/laravel-medialibrary and managed services.
  • What it does not decide for you: multi-file galleries, ordering, responsive image sets, video transcoding, or CDN delivery. Those remain separate roadmap items.

When to Consider This Package

Consider adoption when:

  • The requirement is genuinely 1:1 — one file per model attribute, with derived variants (thumb, resize, crop) and nothing more.
  • You want declarative configuration on the Eloquent model rather than a separate media-entity table and API surface.
  • Your image processing needs are modest and you are comfortable with the Imagine/Intervention ecosystem it builds on.
  • You have Laravel-fluent engineers who will read the package source rather than rely on extensive docs and community answers.
  • You can wrap it behind a thin internal interface (an AttachmentService or repository) so the vendor choice is reversible.
  • You have verified PHP and Laravel version compatibility against your target release line, and you are willing to pin the version and test it on framework upgrades.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need multiple media per model, ordered collections, per-collection conversions, or responsive image generation — spatie/laravel-medialibrary is the well-trodden path with a far larger user base.
  • Dependency risk tolerance is low. Around 80 stars and effectively single-maintainer cadence means abandonment would leave you owning a vendored fork; if your org requires active security patching or SLAs, this is a hard stop.
  • Media is core to the product at scale — CDN delivery, transcoding, transformation-on-the-fly, DAM workflows: use a managed service (Cloudinary, imgix, Uploadcare) or build a dedicated media service.
  • You need enterprise support, security review artifacts, or a published deprecation policy.
  • You are on a bleeding-edge Laravel release and cannot wait for the package to catch up.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): We have a feature on the roadmap that requires file attachments — [avatars / receipts / document upload]. Rather than build upload handling from scratch, we can adopt a small, MIT-licensed Laravel package that handles storage, image variants, and automatic file cleanup on delete. It carries no license or vendor cost, and it removes roughly the boilerplate portion of that work from the critical path. The trade-off is maintenance risk: it is a low-profile open-source project, so we would pin the version, isolate it behind our own interface, and treat it as a reversible decision rather than a permanent platform commitment.

To engineering (the real ask): The surface area is small and Eloquent-native — declarative attachment definitions on models, variants via Imagine, Laravel filesystem disks underneath, cleanup on delete. The concerns to validate in a short spike are: compatibility with our current Laravel/PHP versions, behavior on S3-compatible disks, queue/async processing for large images, and what the upgrade path looks like if the maintainer stops. If the spike fails any of those, we fall back to spatie/laravel-medialibrary, which is heavier but far better supported.

Recommended decision: Time-box a spike (1–2 days) against one real feature, isolate behind an internal attachment interface, and make adoption contingent on passing the compatibility and fallback checks. Do not standardize the whole product on it until a second feature has used it successfully.
