Filament Excel Laravel Package

cube-agency/filament-excel

Filament Excel adds Excel import and export to Filament admin panels, letting you download resource tables and import spreadsheet data with configurable columns, queues, and notifications. Simple setup for Laravel and Filament apps.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Roadmap: bulk data operations. Filament Excel (a Filament plugin for spreadsheet import/export) directly enables the most commonly requested admin-panel feature set: exporting any resource table to XLSX/CSV for reporting, and importing rows from a spreadsheet to bulk-create or update records.
  • Build vs. buy. Replaces a custom export/import implementation (Laravel Excel wrappers, queued export jobs, download endpoints, file-upload forms, validation and error reporting) with a configurable, convention-driven plugin. Typical effort saved: one to three sprints of backend plus UI work, plus ongoing maintenance.
  • Use cases it unlocks. Finance/ops CSV exports, bulk onboarding of customers or catalog items by non-technical staff, data migration between environments, and "export this filtered view" support requests that otherwise land in the backlog.
  • Scope boundaries to plan around. This is an initial v1.0.0 release of a Filament-specific integration, so it is a UI convenience layer over the underlying spreadsheet engine, not a data-pipeline or ETL tool. Large imports, scheduled/sync jobs, and complex transformation logic will still need dedicated engineering.
  • Feature gating opportunity. Exports/imports are good candidates for role- and plan-based permissions (e.g. export enabled on paid tiers, import restricted to admins) — treat as a product decision, not just a config toggle.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt it when:

  • Your admin panel is built on Filament (this plugin is tightly coupled to Filament resources and will not work as a standalone Laravel Excel abstraction).
  • The need is human-in-the-loop spreadsheet I/O inside the admin UI: button-triggered exports of the current table, and upload-a-file imports with column mapping.
  • You want fast time-to-value and are comfortable accepting the plugin's conventions for column definition, queuing, and validation rather than designing your own.
  • You need it on a single, actively maintained Filament major version — verify the supported Filament/PHP/Laravel version matrix before committing, since a v1.0.0 release has limited real-world mileage.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on Filament, or you need exports/imports in APIs, CLI, or customer-facing portals — use maatwebsite/excel (or similar) directly.
  • You need very large datasets: confirm queued/chunked exports and imports are supported and tested at your data volumes; otherwise plan to build around the plugin rather than through it.
  • You require guaranteed long-term support, a security-review trail, or an SLA — a brand-new 1.0.0 with no track record is a risk for regulated or high-volume workflows.
  • Your import logic involves complex multi-sheet transformations, external lookups, or reconciliation — better owned by explicit application code with tests.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: A small, low-cost plugin that gives our Filament admin panel spreadsheet export and import out of the box. It converts a recurring stream of ad-hoc "can you pull this data / upload these records" requests into self-service for operations staff, and avoids a custom build of roughly one to three sprints. Cost of trying it is a spike, not a commitment.

For engineering: It's a Filament-native wrapper around the standard Laravel spreadsheet stack, so it doesn't introduce a new data-access paradigm. Scope the spike to: version compatibility with our Filament major, export performance on our largest table, queued vs. synchronous processing, and how import validation errors surface to users. Wrap it behind a thin internal service/interface so we can swap to a hand-rolled implementation if the plugin stalls or our needs outgrow it — and pin the version, since v1.0.0 will likely see rapid breaking changes.

Recommendation: Timeboxed evaluation (one spike, one representative export, one representative import) before adopting as a dependency. Low downside, meaningful backlog relief — but not yet something to build critical data flows on.
