Technical Evaluation

Baseline: No prior assessment exists. This document establishes the baseline at v2.0.0.

Package context: crescent-purchasing/filament-auditing is a Filament panel plugin that surfaces audit trail data (owen-it/laravel-auditing records) inside the admin UI, and exposes audit-related actions to panel users. It is an admin-experience layer over an existing auditing data model, not a new source of truth.

Architecture fit

  • Fits a Laravel + Filament admin architecture where laravel-auditing is already installed and audit records already exist. Value is realized only if the underlying audit tables are populated and meaningful.
  • Clean separation of concerns in principle: audit persistence stays with the auditing library; this package is presentation and actioning. Low blast radius on domain logic if that holds in the implementation.
  • The plugin is panel-scoped, so it does not contaminate API or job layers. Acceptable for an internal back-office surface.

Integration feasibility

  • Feasible for any codebase already on Filament v4 or v5. Straightforward composer install + panel plugin registration.
  • Not feasible without a Filament major upgrade for teams on v3. The constraint shift (v4 minimum) is the single largest gating factor in this release.
  • The consolidated action model is a behavioral change, not just a namespace change. Any existing customization that referenced multiple individual actions will need rework.

Technical risk

  • Major version bump with admitted incomplete work. The release notes state "probably also need to do other changes to better integrate Filament v4 but that can come later." This is a candid but material signal: the v2.0.0 surface is functional, not final. Expect churn across 2.0.x.
  • Coupled upgrade. Adopting this release forces a Filament v4+ upgrade, which pulls in Filament v4's own breaking changes across every panel in the application. The real risk budget here is dominated by Filament, not by this package.
  • Small-maintainer / single-vendor risk. Commit history shows mostly Dependabot noise plus one substantive feature PR. Bus factor and long-term maintenance cadence are open concerns.
  • Constraint transparency gap. The release notes do not state supported PHP, Laravel, or Livewire versions. Those must be read from composer.json before any commitment.
  • Unverified data path. No evidence in this release of changes to audit querying, pagination, or authorization of audit visibility. Access control over audit data is a compliance concern that should be explicitly verified rather than assumed.

Key questions

  1. What are the exact composer.json constraints for php, laravel/framework, filament/filament, and owen-it/laravel-auditing?
  2. Does v2.0.0 preserve a stable public API for action customization, or is the consolidated-action model still in flux?
  3. How is authorization enforced on audit record visibility — policy-based, panel-access-based, or implicit?
  4. Is the "consolidated single action" a UI aggregation, or a removal of per-audit actions that downstream teams may have depended on?
  5. Are audit records immutable/read-only through this UI, or can panel users alter or delete them?
  6. What is the upgrade guide and versioning policy for 2.x — will 2.0.1+ introduce further breaking changes given the deferred integration work?
  7. Is there a test suite covering the Filament v4/v5 matrix, and what is its coverage of the audit query layer?
  8. Who owns this dependency long-term, and is there a credible fallback if maintenance stalls?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Target stack: Laravel + Filament v4 or v5 + owen-it/laravel-auditing + a populated audits table.
  • Best fit is an internal admin panel where audit visibility is a compliance or support requirement, and where the team already owns a Filament panel.
  • Poor fit for public-facing panels, API-only services, or teams on Filament v3 who cannot absorb a full panel upgrade.

Migration path (v1.1.0 → v2.0.0)

  1. Pre-flight audit. Inventory all panel usages of the package's actions and any custom views or extensions. The consolidated-action change is the most likely source of silent breakage.
  2. Filament upgrade or freeze. If the app is on Filament v3, treat this as a Filament upgrade project with the plugin as a passenger. If a Filament v3 upgrade is not funded, pin the plugin at v1.1.0 and defer.
  3. Branch and isolate. Do the upgrade on a dedicated branch with the plugin bump and Filament bump as a single atomic change, so failures are attributable.
  4. Constraint verification. Read the installed composer.json constraints and confirm PHP/Laravel compatibility before running composer update.
  5. Behavioral diff. Manually walk every audit-related screen. Confirm record visibility, pagination, filtering, action availability, and permission gating match pre-upgrade behavior.
  6. Data integrity check. Confirm no writes were introduced and that audit records are unchanged pre/post migration.

Compatibility

  • Plugin v2.0.0 is generally not backward compatible with v1.x consumers due to the Filament floor and the action consolidation.
  • Filament v5 is claimed as supported, but the release emphasis is the v4 migration; v5 should be treated as untested-by-us until validated in a non-production environment.
  • Coexistence with owen-it/laravel-auditing version constraints must be verified — a mismatch here is the most likely hard blocker.

Sequencing

  1. Decide Filament v4/v5 upgrade appetite (go/no-go gate).
  2. If go: verify plugin composer constraints against the application's lockfile.
  3. Upgrade Filament first, stabilize the panel, then add the plugin bump.
  4. Validate in staging against a realistic audit-table volume.
  5. Roll out behind a feature flag or to a single admin role first.
  6. Only then decommission v1.1.0 references and update internal docs.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Low surface area to maintain: it is a presentation plugin over data the team already owns. Ongoing cost is mostly version tracking against Filament majors, which are infrequent but disruptive.
  • The deferred Filament v4 integration work means the team should budget for at least one follow-up minor upgrade cycle within the next few quarters.
  • Dependabot activity indicates CI hygiene is automated, which is a positive signal for routine upkeep but says nothing about functional coverage.

Support

  • External support is community-grade. Do not plan on vendor SLAs. Internal ownership must be assigned to a named engineer or small team.
  • Because audit visibility is often a compliance control, an internal runbook is mandatory: what to do when audit screens are empty, slow, or show unexpected records.
  • Upgrade documentation for 2.x should be authored internally after the first successful migration rather than relying on upstream notes, which are terse.

Scaling

  • The scaling profile is dominated by the audit table, not by the plugin. Large audits tables without appropriate indexes will degrade list views regardless of plugin version.
  • Audit data grows monotonically. Plan retention, archival, or partitioning independently of this package, and confirm the plugin's queries respect those boundaries.
  • Panel-user concurrency is typically low for admin tooling; the realistic bottleneck is query cost on audit volume, not request throughput.

Failure modes

  • Silent UI regression post-upgrade. Consolidated actions may render differently or disappear; this is the highest-probability failure and is not loud. Mitigate with a visual checklist.
  • Hard composer conflict. Filament or auditing library version mismatch blocks installation entirely. Detectable at install time; low severity, high friction.
  • Empty or degraded audit views due to schema or config drift with laravel-auditing. Manifests as blank panels rather than errors.
  • Authorization gap. Audit data leaking to users who should not see it is the highest-severity failure. Must be explicitly tested, not inferred.
  • Stalled maintenance upstream. If the package goes quiet, the fallback is to fork or to build a minimal in-house Filament resource over the audit model — a modest effort given the plugin's scope.

Ramp-up

  • Low for a developer already fluent in Filament: hours to install and configure, roughly a day to validate behaviors.
  • Higher for the organization if the Filament major upgrade is bundled in — that is a multi-week effort depending on panel complexity.
  • Non-trivial for compliance and security reviewers: they will want to see authorization tests and evidence that audit records are read-only through this surface before sign-off.
  • Recommend a short internal spike (1–2 days) to produce a compatibility and behavior delta report before committing engineering time to the upgrade.
