Product Decisions This Supports

  • Sign-out UX and trust in the session model. The v1.0.2 fix addresses a real usability trap: the session was cleared, but the redirect landed on a page still visible to signed-out users, so the interface gave no confirmation. For a PM this is the difference between "sign-out works" and "sign-out feels like it works" — and the latter drives duplicate sign-out attempts, shared-device anxiety, and support contacts.
  • Support-cost reduction. "I logged out but I'm still on the dashboard" is a recurring, low-severity, high-volume ticket class. Landing on the sign-in screen with an explicit confirmation message closes the loop without adding new flows.
  • Security-adjacent product posture. Sign-out is the one auth surface every user touches, including on kiosks and shared machines. Clear post-condition feedback ("you are signed out") is a cheap, credible control that pairs well with messaging about session hygiene in trust/security reviews.
  • Build vs. buy for auth scaffolding. This is a narrow, correct, drop-in concern. Buy it rather than spend a sprint on redirect-target bikeshedding; reserve in-house effort for differentiated auth (SSO, MFA, step-up, session revocation).
  • Roadmap hook for session management. A package that owns the sign-out boundary is the natural place to later evaluate "sign out of all devices," idle-timeout messaging, and post-logout landing configuration. Track it as an extension point, not a headline feature.
  • Test-coverage signal for vendor evaluation. The release ships with a browser smoke test that drives sign-out through the account menu — i.e., the regression is pinned at the same layer users experience it, not just at the controller. That is a meaningful maintenance-quality data point when weighing continued dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are on a standard Laravel auth setup and the sign-out path currently redirects somewhere signed-out users can still see (the exact failure this release fixes).
  • You need correct, self-explanatory sign-out behavior across multiple entry points (account menu, global nav, forced logout) and want one implementation instead of per-team variants.
  • Your team has no dedicated auth specialist and would rather inherit a tested flow than author one.
  • You want browser-level regression coverage of the auth journey and would otherwise not write it.
  • You are assembling a baseline auth scaffolding and want the boring, correct behaviors settled early.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need enterprise identity: SSO/SAML/OIDC, SCIM provisioning, MFA, step-up authentication, or full session administration. This package handles the sign-out boundary, not identity.
  • Your logout destination is product-specific (marketing site, tenant-specific login, deep-link return) and would require overriding the behavior — at that point you are forking a small package to get very little.
  • You are on a non-Laravel stack, or on a Laravel version outside the package's supported range.
  • You already own a customized auth layer; adopting creates two sources of truth for the same redirect.

Risk notes: patch release, no breaking changes, no migration work. The behavior change is a redirect target plus a flash message — worth a one-line check against any analytics or funnel instrumentation keyed to the post-logout URL.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: A small, low-risk dependency that fixes a confusing dead end at sign-out. Users were being signed out correctly but returned to a page that looked signed in, which generated avoidable support contacts and undermined confidence in account security. The fix routes them to the sign-in screen with a clear confirmation. Cost is negligible, there are no breaking changes, and the scope is deliberately narrow — sign-out, not identity.

To engineering: Patch release on an auth-scaffolding package. Sign-out now redirects to the sign-in screen with a flash confirmation instead of auth.home, and the regression is covered by a browser smoke test that exercises sign-out through the account menu. Drop-in adoption; verify your post-logout landing and any analytics events bound to that URL, and confirm the smoke test runs in your CI if you mirror the pattern.
