Product Decisions This Supports

  • Almost none for external product work. This is an internal style-configuration artifact from one agency, not a capability you build features on. It should not appear on a roadmap or influence feature prioritization.
  • Build vs. buy for code-quality tooling: the real decision it informs is whether to standardize on a team-published ruleset versus established, maintained baselines (PSR-12, Laravel Pint, PHP-CS-Fixer's @PSR12/@PhpCsFixer presets, or Symfony's coding-standard package). The answer is overwhelmingly the maintained baseline.
  • Vendor-risk assessment: archived status, 1 star, 0 dependents, and a self-declared "subject to change — use at your own risk" disclaimer make this a textbook example of a dependency that fails a supply-chain review before it ever reaches a technical evaluation.
  • Use case at best: a reference snapshot of how one agency configured its linters, useful if you're writing your own php-cs-fixer/Pint config and want a starting point to copy — read it, don't depend on it.
  • Not a differentiator. Coding style enforcement is table stakes hygiene; it produces no customer-visible value and therefore no product leverage.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only if all of the following hold:

  • You are inside Coding Labs (or a direct collaborator) and this is the sanctioned internal standard.
  • You need a frozen reference config and are comfortable vendoring the file into your own repo rather than installing it as a dependency.
  • You have no requirement for ongoing maintenance, CVE response, or PHP-version compatibility guarantees.

Look elsewhere — essentially always, for everyone else — when:

  • Maintenance matters: the package is archived, meaning no bug fixes, no PHP 8.x+ compatibility work, and no security response. Any transitive dependency inherits that risk.
  • Ecosystem validation matters: 0 dependents and 1 star means no community stress-testing; you'd be the only user finding the sharp edges.
  • Change stability matters: the author explicitly warns the API is subject to change, which is disqualifying for anything in a shared CI pipeline.
  • You want the same outcome faster: Laravel Pint ships an opinionated preset with first-party maintenance; PHP-CS-Fixer and PHP_CodeSniffer with PSR-12 give you equivalent or better results with long-term support.
  • Governance matters: adopting a single-maintainer, archived package into a standards pipeline creates a bus-factor of one for something every engineer touches daily.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: Not a dependency we should take. It's an archived, single-maintainer configuration file from another agency's internal toolkit, with a one-star footprint, zero downstream users, and an explicit "use at your own risk" warning. There is no cost to skipping it and a real, if small, maintenance and compliance cost to adopting it. Code style enforcement is hygiene, not strategy — we get it from vendors with support commitments.

Engineering: We already have better options. Laravel Pint or PHP-CS-Fixer with the @PSR12 preset delivers the same outcome with active maintenance, documented rule sets, and PHP-version compatibility. If a specific rule in this package is genuinely useful, copy that rule into our own committed config — a five-minute task — rather than adding an archived package to composer.json. Recommend we treat this repo as reading material only and note in our standards doc that archived, zero-dependent style packages are out of policy.
