Getting Started

cleaniquecoders/laravel-helper is a utility package that ships global helper functions (and possibly small support classes/traits) you call directly from app code — no facade wiring or config publishing required for the common case. Version 4.4.0 is a compatibility release: it adds Laravel 13 (^13.0) to the illuminate constraints, PHPUnit 12, and Pest 4 support, with no API changes called out.

Minimal path to first use:

  1. composer require cleaniquecoders/laravel-helper
  2. Confirm auto-discovery picked up the service provider: php artisan about (or check bootstrap/cache/packages.php).
  3. Read the README catalogue first, then src/ — helper packages usually register files via the files autoload key, so the function list is literally the source files. Grep for function to get the real inventory rather than trusting docs.
  4. Pick one helper and use it in a throwaway php artisan tinker session before adopting it in app code.

Best first use case: date/string/array formatting helpers in a Blade view or a FormRequest — low-blast-radius spots where a global function reads better than a static call, and where you can immediately see whether the output matches your expectations.

Implementation Patterns

Call helpers directly, wrap them at the boundary. Use the package functions inside your own thin app-level helpers (app/Support/helpers.php) rather than sprinkling vendor function names across the codebase. That gives you one place to swap the package out or shim behaviour later, and it keeps static analysis honest.

Blade and form layer. Global helpers shine in views and validation messages where you want format_money($x)-style brevity without importing a class. Keep business logic in actions/services; reserve helpers for presentation and small transformations.

Service provider extension. If the package exposes macros or a publishable config (php artisan vendor:publish --tag=...), register your overrides in AppServiceProvider::boot() after the package provider. Check vendor/cleaniquecoders/laravel-helper/src for a provider and any mergeConfigFrom call to know whether defaults are overridable.

Testing. With PHPUnit 12 / Pest 4, prefer attributes (#[Test], #[DataProvider]) over docblock annotations — the old annotation style is deprecated in PHPUnit 12. If you're on Pest 4, add an expectation or two for any helper whose output you rely on, so a minor release that "just bumps constraints" still gets caught if behaviour drifts.

Upgrade workflow for 4.4.0. Treat it as a routine minor bump: composer update cleaniquecoders/laravel-helper, run the suite, smoke-test any helper with locale- or timezone-sensitive output. There is nothing in the notes suggesting a breaking change, so no code edits should be required on Laravel 11/12.

CI alignment. If your pipeline mirrors the package's, note it standardised on Laravel 12 + PHP 8.4/8.3. Matching that matrix locally reduces "works in CI, fails in prod" surprises from PHP minor-version differences in string/date handling.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Global function collisions are the main risk. Helper packages define functions in the global namespace via composer files autoloading. A name clash with your own app/Support/helpers.php is a fatal error, not a warning. Before adding a helper of your own, grep the vendor directory for the name. Wrapping package helpers (see above) also mitigates this.
  • function_exists() guards. If the package wraps its definitions in guards, a same-named function elsewhere will silently win depending on autoload order — a nasty, hard-to-trace bug. Verify which definition actually executes with ReflectionFunction.
  • Laravel 13 support is declared, but CI tests 12. The release notes say ^13.0 is allowed while the standardised workflow runs Laravel 12. That's normal for a package released ahead of the framework, but it means Laravel 13 compatibility is constraint-level, not yet exercised in CI. If you're an early Laravel 13 adopter, run your own suite against it and pin the package version until a 13-targeted CI job appears.
  • IDE and static analysis blind spots. Global functions don't autocomplete or type-check out of the box. Generate stubs (barryvdh/laravel-ide-helper, or a hand-written _ide_helper.php) and make sure Larastan/PHPStan scans the vendor helper files, or you'll get "undefined function" noise and lose the return types.
  • Autoload changes need a dump. After adding the package, run composer dump-autoload if functions appear undefined in an already-running process — files autoload entries are resolved at dump time.
  • Pest 4 / PHPUnit 12 migration in your own tests. If you upgraded the package's dev constraints in a monorepo or a shared test harness, expect PHPUnit 12's removal of deprecated annotation-based metadata to surface as warnings-turned-errors. Fix your tests, not the package.
  • Debugging helper behaviour. These functions are stateless by design, so oddities are usually environmental: APP_LOCALE, config('app.timezone'), or the active Carbon version. Reproduce in tinker with the same locale/timezone as the failing request before filing an issue.
  • Budget for vendor surface area. Helper packages accumulate loosely-related functions over time. Enable only what you use conceptually — wrap, don't fan out — so a future major release's removals are a one-file diff in your app rather than a repo-wide search.
