Laravel Macro Describer Laravel Package

claudiodekker/laravel-macro-describer

A small Laravel helper for documenting macros: it records descriptions of your registered macros so developers and tooling can see what each one does. Handy for keeping macro-heavy codebases readable, though it's a niche utility with limited adoption.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Exploration, not delivery. At 0.1.0-beta with an explicit "Proof of Concept — do not use in production" caveat, this package can only inform discovery decisions: feasibility spikes, internal demos, and architecture prototypes. It cannot back a build-vs-buy call, a committed roadmap item, or a customer-facing date.
  • Build vs. buy is unresolved. The package signals that someone considers the underlying problem worth solving, but a PoC says nothing about API stability, performance, security posture, or long-term maintenance. Treat this as one data point in a wider landscape review (existing first-party Laravel features, mature community packages, or in-house work), not as a candidate solution.
  • De-risk by abstraction. If a prototype on this package reveals genuine value, the PM decision is to fund a thin internal interface layer around it so the dependency can be swapped — the package's API is the least stable thing about it right now.
  • Version pinning and isolation. Any trial should be pinned to an exact version, installed in a sandbox/prototype app, and kept out of shared codebases. No transitive dependency should reach a production application.
  • Roadmap signal to watch. Track the path from PoC → alpha → stable: changelog cadence, a documented public API, tests, a license, and a named maintainer. Those milestones, not feature lists, are the gate for re-evaluating adoption.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • You are in a time-boxed feasibility spike and the cost of trying it is a day or two, not a sprint.
  • The problem is non-critical and reversible — no user data, payments, auth, or compliance surface.
  • You can isolate it in a throwaway Laravel app and discard the code afterward.

Look elsewhere (or wait) when:

  • Anything is headed to production, staging, or a customer demo with real data.
  • You need an SLA, security review, or dependency audit — a pre-1.0 PoC typically has no published security policy or support commitment.
  • The same capability exists in a Laravel first-party feature or a package with a stable release line, active maintenance, and adoption history.
  • Your team cannot absorb an unannounced breaking change on 0.x — under semver, minor bumps here are permitted to break the API.

Explicit unknowns to resolve before any further evaluation: license terms, maintainer/backing, test coverage, and whether the PoC's scope matches the problem you actually have.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: A Laravel/PHP package has appeared at version 0.1.0-beta, explicitly labeled a proof of concept and not for production. We are not adopting it and it changes no roadmap commitments. We are logging it as an early signal, letting an engineer spend a short, bounded spike to see whether the underlying problem is real for us, and re-evaluating only if it reaches a stable, maintained release.

Engineering: Treat 0.1.0-beta as read-only research. No production or shared-branch usage; spikes only, pinned to an exact version, in a sandbox app. Assume the public API will break and that there is no security or support guarantee. Any experiment goes behind our own interface so the dependency is disposable. Bring back a written read on feasibility, license, maintenance signals, and maturity — not a pull request.
