Baum Laravel Package

ciaochung/baum

Baum provides nested set model support for Laravel Eloquent models, letting you store and query hierarchical tree data such as categories or menus with efficient ancestor, descendant, sibling, and depth operations.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for hierarchical data. Baum models trees (categories, org charts, comment threads, menu structures, permission scopes, geo regions) using the Nested Set pattern: every node stores left/right bounds so that reading an entire subtree or the full ancestor path is a single indexed query rather than a recursive loop. This directly informs whether you hand-roll tree traversal in application code or adopt a schema-level pattern.
  • Read-heavy vs. write-heavy workload shaping. Nested Set trades cheap reads for expensive writes — inserting or moving a node rewrites the bounds of every sibling to its right, and concurrent writes need locking. A PM can use this to reason about feature design: a category tree edited a few times a day is a great fit; a live activity feed or a collaborative board that reorders constantly is not.
  • Data model and API contract decisions. Choosing Nested Set commits you to extra columns (_lft, _rgt, parent_id, depth) that leak into migrations, seeders, admin tooling, and any export/import format. That is a long-lived decision with migration cost, not a library detail.
  • Roadmap sequencing for tree-dependent features. If "nested categories" or "org hierarchy" is on the roadmap, this package shortens the path to a working prototype — but only for teams already on a compatible Laravel version, which is the main caveat here.
  • Risk budgeting in the dependency portfolio. With zero stars, zero dependents, and a single unnamed maintainer, adopting this package is effectively a decision to vendor and own a small piece of infrastructure. The PM decision is less "is this good?" and more "are we willing to maintain a fork of a fork?"

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • You have a genuinely read-dominant tree — subtree fetches and breadcrumb/ancestor queries dominate, and writes (creates, moves, deletes) are infrequent and can tolerate a transaction with row locks.
  • You are on a Laravel version this fork actually supports, and you have verified that by reading the source and running the test suite against your target version — not by trusting the README. The upstream baum/baum line stopped tracking Laravel releases years ago, and a 0-star fork gives you no signal that this was fixed.
  • The tree is moderate in size and depth. Nested Set is comfortable for thousands of nodes; it becomes painful for very deep, very wide, or continually rebalanced trees.
  • You can vendor the code (copy it into your repo or pin a commit) and accept that you, not the maintainer, are on the hook for bug fixes, security patches, and PHP/Laravel upgrades.
  • Someone on the team has read the implementation. Nested Set has famously subtle edge cases — moving a node across subtrees, rebuilding corrupted bounds, soft deletes interacting with _lft/_rgt. A tiny unaudited library is a bad place to discover those.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Any of the above fails. The pragmatic default for a new Laravel build is kalnoy/nestedset — it is actively maintained, widely depended on, supports modern Laravel, and covers the same pattern with better tooling and a real community to absorb the edge cases.
  • Writes are frequent or concurrent. Use a plain adjacency list (parent_id) plus recursive CTEs (MySQL 8+, PostgreSQL) via something like staudenmeir/laravel-cte, or a closure table. Modern databases make adjacency lists far more viable than they were when Baum was written.
  • The hierarchy is shallow and bounded (two or three fixed levels). Just store parent_id and be done — Nested Set's complexity buys you nothing.
  • You need graph semantics, not trees — multiple parents, DAGs, tagging-style many-to-many ancestry. Nested Set cannot express that, and no amount of library quality fixes the model mismatch.
  • You need auditability or temporal queries ("what did the org chart look like last quarter?"). Bounds-based storage mutates in place and is a poor fit.
  • Supply-chain policy applies. Zero dependents means no one has stress-tested this in production. If your org has dependency-review or SBOM gates, this will not clear them without an explicit exception.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives — the one-liner: This is a small, MIT-licensed Laravel library that implements a well-understood database pattern for storing trees (categories, org units, menus) so that reading a whole branch is one fast query instead of a recursive crawl. The pattern is sound; the specific package is not.

The recommendation: treat it as a reference implementation, not an adoption candidate. It is an unmaintained-lineage fork with no community, no dependents, and no demonstrated Laravel-version support. Adopting it converts a commodity decision into an owned one — we inherit maintenance, patching, and upgrade risk for a component that has a maintained, battle-tested equivalent.

What we do instead: standardize on kalnoy/nestedset for Nested Set needs. It is the same pattern, actively maintained, and clears dependency review. If it does not fit, the decision is between an adjacency list with recursive CTEs and a closure table — both of which we can support with first-party code and no exotic dependency.

For engineering — the honest framing: the reason to look at this repo is the idea, not the artifact. Nested Set is the right shape when reads dominate and the tree is edited rarely; it is the wrong shape under heavy reordering or concurrent moves. Read the Baum source if you want a compact reference for how _lft/_rgt maintenance works, then write or adopt a maintained implementation. The cost of a Nested Set choice is not the library — it is the extra columns, the migration and backfill work, the admin tooling that must respect the bounds, and the move-operation correctness that will outlive any package. Budget for that explicitly, and do not let a 0-star dependency be the thing that makes it fragile.
