Datadog Laravel Laravel Package

christian98/datadog-laravel

christian98/datadog-laravel integrates Laravel applications with Datadog, forwarding logs, metrics, and traces to your Datadog account. It ships a service provider, configurable handlers, and helpers for quick, low-effort observability setup.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy (instrumentation layer): Decides whether we hand-roll a Datadog client wrapper in Laravel or adopt a thin adapter. This package is essentially a service-provider + facade over Datadog's official PHP SDK — it removes boilerplate (config, container binding, facades) but adds no proprietary capability. That makes the real decision "thin third-party wrapper vs. 40 lines of our own glue," not "buy a platform."
  • Observability roadmap sequencing: Supports a decision to ship custom business metrics (signups, checkout conversions, queue depth, job failures) into Datadog quickly, rather than waiting on a larger APM/tracing initiative. It is a fast path to DogStatsD-style metrics, not to distributed tracing.
  • Standardization across services: If we have several Laravel services, a facade-based package can become the house convention for emitting metrics — a small but real win for consistency in dashboards and alert naming.
  • Feature gating and experiment analysis: If product decisions depend on business metrics landing in Datadog (funnel dashboards, canary comparisons), this is a cheap enabler.
  • Not supported: Anything requiring official vendor support, SLAs, security attestations, or a maintained upgrade path. Zero stars and zero dependents means no community signal and no downstream battle-testing to lean on.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following hold:

  • We are already standardized on Datadog and just need lightweight custom metric/event emission from a Laravel app.
  • The team is comfortable treating it as vendored glue: pin the version, read the (small) source, and be prepared to fork or replace it without ceremony.
  • The integration surface is narrow — emit metrics, flush on request/job completion — with no dependency on exotic features.
  • We have a fallback contract: our own MetricsEmitter interface with this package as one implementation, so swapping to the raw SDK or OpenTelemetry is a one-file change.
  • Timeline pressure favors a one-afternoon integration over building the adapter ourselves.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Adoption risk is unacceptable. 0 stars, 0 dependents, GitLab-hosted, apparent single maintainer, no evidence of release cadence, CI, or issue triage. For a payments or regulated workload, that is disqualifying regardless of code quality.
  • We need APM/tracing, not just metrics. Use Datadog's official dd-trace-php extension and its Laravel integration; a PHP-userland SDK wrapper will not give you spans, profiling, or trace-log correlation.
  • Security/procurement review applies. An unmaintained package with no security policy, no CVE history, and no vendor backing will not clear most enterprise reviews.
  • We run Octane, long-lived workers, or high-throughput queues, where flush semantics, memory behavior, and per-request lifecycle assumptions in a thin wrapper deserve scrutiny you would rather own directly.
  • We are not committed to Datadog. Coupling to a Datadog-specific facade raises switching costs; OpenTelemetry instrumentation keeps options open.
  • The wrapper is trivially reproducible. If the value is just "bind a client in the container," writing it ourselves is lower total cost of ownership than a dependency with no support.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a small, low-cost enabler for getting product and reliability metrics into Datadog faster — it shortens time-to-first-dashboard for custom business events. It is not a strategic platform choice, and it carries maintainer-risk: near-zero adoption, no vendor backing. Recommend a time-boxed trial behind our own abstraction so the downside is capped at a few hours of engineering and no lock-in.

To engineering: Treat it as a convenience adapter over the official Datadog PHP SDK — service provider, config, facade, done. Because it is unmaintained by any measurable signal (0 stars, 0 dependents), we will pin the version, read the source, and wrap it behind a MetricsEmitter interface so we can drop to the raw SDK or OpenTelemetry without touching call sites. Evaluation criteria: does it flush correctly in queue workers and Octane, does it handle agent-unreachable gracefully, and is the code small enough to fork if needed. Default position is "acceptable for a spike, not for production without the abstraction in place."
