chrisreedio/filament-breakpoint-badge
A Filament plugin that adds a badge displaying the current responsive breakpoint (sm, md, lg, xl) in your admin panel, so you can see at a glance which screen size is active. Ideal for debugging Tailwind breakpoints while building and testing responsive layouts.
Initial baseline assessment — established at v3.0.1 (no prior assessment on file).
Architecture fit
chrisreedio/filament-breakpoint-badge is a single-purpose Filament panel plugin that surfaces the active Tailwind responsive breakpoint in the admin UI. Architecturally it is near-zero-friction: a Laravel package with a service provider that registers a render hook into the Filament topbar/user menu, plus a small client-side asset that reads the viewport width and resolves it against the breakpoint set. No models, no migrations, no routes, no persistence, no queue or scheduler footprint. It sits entirely inside the presentation layer of the admin panel and therefore has no coupling to our domain code. Fit is good for any Laravel + Filament 3 application; it is irrelevant outside Filament panels.
Integration feasibility
Registration is a one-line ->plugin(BreakpointBadgePlugin::make()) in the Panel provider plus a composer require. Realistic effort is well under a day including QA verification, most of which is environment and deploy-pipeline validation rather than code. v3.0.1 is a maintenance patch: two GitHub Actions bumps (checkout 3→4, git-auto-commit-action 4→5, both CI-only and inert at runtime) and a dependency refresh for Laravel 11. There are no API, namespace, hook, or config changes, so the integration surface described above is unchanged from v3.0.0.
Technical risk Overall risk is low, concentrated in version-alignment rather than code quality:
tailwind.config.js screens (e.g. adding 3xl or renaming breakpoints), the badge may report Tailwind defaults rather than our actual breakpoints unless the plugin exposes configuration.Key questions
composer.json constraints for php, illuminate/*, and filament/filament? Is Filament 4 supported or explicitly excluded?Stack fit Targets Laravel 10/11 with Filament 3 and PHP 8.1+. Requires no database, no environment variables, no external services, and no changes to existing application configuration beyond the Panel provider. It is additive and isolated, so it can be adopted as a developer-experience enhancement without touching business logic.
Migration path
composer update chrisreedio/filament-breakpoint-badge and redeploy.^3.0 to capture the Laravel 11 constraint relaxation.Compatibility
Pin to ^3.0 and let the patch line float. The constraint change in v3.0.1 is the material item — it widens the allowed Laravel range, which reduces the chance of a Composer conflict in our root project. Verify against our lockfile before merging; a dependency-bump release can still surface transitive conflicts even when the package code is unchanged.
Sequencing
composer require --dev in a feature branch; inspect resolved constraints against our lockfile.config:cache/view:cache.Maintenance
Minimal. Expect periodic Dependabot-driven patch releases with no functional content — v3.0.1 is exactly that shape. Budget a light quarterly review: composer audit, confirm the Filament constraint still matches our panel version, and confirm the plugin still renders after framework upgrades. Because the package is small and MIT-licensed, the maintenance ceiling is a fork, not a rewrite.
Support No vendor SLA; single-maintainer project with a README-level documentation surface. Internal ramp-up is trivial (one line of registration), so support burden effectively lands on the owning team rather than upstream. Escalation path for a blocking bug is a local patch or fork — acceptable given the code size, but should be acknowledged rather than assumed.
Scaling No meaningful scaling characteristics: rendering is client-side, payload is a few KB, there is no server-side work per request, no storage, and no background processing. It will not affect panel performance or capacity planning at any user count.
Failure modes
Ramp-up Under an hour for any Laravel developer to install and verify. No new concepts introduced beyond standard Filament plugin registration. Primary onboarding need is a one-paragraph note in the panel documentation stating the badge exists, that it is environment/role-gated, and that it must be re-verified at each Filament major upgrade.
