Filament Google Maps Laravel Package

cheesegrits/filament-google-maps

Filament Google Maps brings interactive Google Maps fields, columns, and widgets to Filament admin panels, with geocoding, marker and polygon editing, and map-based forms/tables for displaying and editing locations.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for location capture in admin. The package supplies the three primitives most location features need — a map picker form field, a table column for display, and a dashboard widget for pins — so you can decide whether "map-based admin UX" is a v1 requirement or later polish, and estimate it in hours instead of dev-days.
  • Build vs. buy on back-office tooling. A custom Filament map field plus geocoding plus a widget is typically 3–8 engineering days and ongoing maintenance. This package compresses that to configuration, which supports the "buy for internal tooling, build only where maps are the product" call.
  • Roadmap sequencing and unblocking. It cheaply enables adjacent items: store/asset locator, service-area or delivery-zone definition, field-service dispatch views, geo-tagged CRM records. Useful whenever a roadmap item is stalled only on "we have no way to capture coordinates."
  • Data model decisions that are expensive to reverse. Adopting it forces early answers: store lat/lng separately from address strings? Geocode at write time or read time? What precision, and what happens when an address later changes? Better to settle these before launch than after.
  • A vendor and cost decision, not just a technical one. Choosing this is implicitly a Google Maps Platform commitment — API key, billing account, quotas, and ToS constraints on caching/storing geocoded results. That belongs in the pricing and compliance conversation, not only the backlog.
  • Platform standardization. If the org already runs Filament, this keeps the admin UI consistent rather than introducing a bespoke JS map component with its own build and upgrade path.
  • Prioritization signal. 325 stars with effectively no tracked dependents reads as niche-but-real demand: a credible convenience layer, not a de facto standard. The v5.0.2 release (v4 fixes merged forward, Laravel 13 support) is a modest positive maintenance signal, but it does not change the adoption profile. That still supports a timeboxed spike rather than a platform-level bet.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are on Filament (confirm compatibility against your pinned major version) and need map input/display inside admin forms, tables, or dashboards within days.
  • You are on, or planning an upgrade to, Laravel 13 — v5.0.2 states the package now supports it. Treat framework support and Filament support as two separate checks; passing one does not imply the other.
  • The map is back-office tooling — operators picking a location, staff scanning pins — not a customer-facing or performance-critical experience.
  • You already have, or are willing to own, a Google Maps Platform billing account and key-management practice. The package does not remove that operational burden.
  • You specifically want the field + column + widget triad and would otherwise maintain three separate integrations.

Look elsewhere or build in-house when:

  • You need Mapbox, Leaflet/OpenStreetMap, or self-hosted tiles for cost, licensing, or offline reasons.
  • You need serious geo capability — routing, large-scale clustering, polygon drawing/editing, spatial queries. Pair with a real GIS layer or dedicated service; don't stretch this wrapper.
  • You require vendor SLAs, a named maintainer, or a security review with a support contract.
  • You're outside Filament (plain Laravel/Blade/Livewire) or on an unsupported Filament major. Laravel 13 support in v5.0.2 narrows but does not close this risk.
  • Procurement or legal forbids Google Maps terms.
  • Zero tracked dependents is a hard blocker for your risk policy. If you proceed anyway, pin the version, wrap it behind an internal adapter, and budget for a fork.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executive one-liner: "A small add-on for the admin panel we already run that lets staff see and set locations on a map — days of work instead of weeks, and no new platform to operate."

Engineering: A thin Filament wrapper providing a map form field, table column, and dashboard widget, backed by Google Maps JS and geocoding. v5.0.2 merged the v4 line forward and adds Laravel 13 support, so verify the Laravel and Filament version matrix together during the spike. We still own the API key, referrer/IP restrictions, and quota monitoring. Recommend wrapping it behind our own interface and pinning versions, given a single-maintainer package with limited production adoption.

Finance/Procurement: Introduces a Google Maps Platform line item. Usually small at internal-tool volumes, but it is usage-based — assign a budget owner and quota alerts, and note the ToS limits on persisting geocoded results.

Product/Design: Unblocks location-centric features (locator, service areas, dispatch views) inside the current admin surface with no bespoke UI build. Scoped as a timeboxed spike with a defined fallback — a custom field or a Leaflet-based component — if compatibility or licensing fails.

The ask: Approve a short evaluation spike (one developer, a few days) on a branch, gated on three exit criteria: Laravel 13 + Filament version compatibility, key and quota setup, and a documented fallback path.
