Laravel Lang Laravel Package

caouecs/laravel-lang

Laravel Lang provides ready-made translation files for Laravel's validation, authentication, password reset, and pagination messages in dozens of languages. Drop in the locales you need and your app speaks your users' language out of the box.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • This is a content package, not a code library. It ships PHP array files (validation.php, auth.php, passwords.php, pagination.php) plus JSON attribute-name files for ~80 locales, consumed by Laravel's native Translator. No service provider, no runtime hooks, no middleware — it either works transparently or does nothing.
  • Fit is high for any Laravel app that needs out-of-the-box framework strings (validation errors, auth failures, pagination). It does not address domain/content translation, which stays with the team.
  • Architectural risk is therefore low but so is leverage: it is a vendored data dependency, not infrastructure. Treat it as you would a fixture, not a framework.

Integration feasibility

  • High. composer require, then copy or publish locale directories into the app. On Laravel ≤8 the target is resources/lang/; on Laravel 9+ it is lang/.
  • Important caveat on this record: the metadata (0 stars, 0 dependents, score 0) almost certainly reflects a renamed/transferred repository rather than real adoption. caouecs/laravel-lang is the legacy name; the actively maintained line is laravel-lang/lang and laravel-lang/common (which provides php artisan lang:add). Verify the canonical Composer package name and its Laravel support matrix before pinning. Depending on the legacy package is a one-way door into an unsupported branch.

Technical risk

  • Runtime/security: negligible — pure PHP arrays, MIT licensed, no executable surface, no transitive dependencies.
  • Governance: moderate. Volunteer-maintained content with no SLA and no semantic guarantees on file contents.
  • Correctness: validation messages evolve with Laravel minor releases; keys added upstream won't exist in a stale pin, and missing keys fail silently to the fallback locale.
  • Drift: once published into the repo, the files are yours. composer update will not refresh them, creating a false sense of currency.

Key questions

  1. Which Laravel major(s) are in scope, and does the chosen package line support all of them?
  2. Do we publish files into VCS or load from vendor/? Who owns the diff review on upgrade?
  3. Which locales do we actually support commercially — and are we willing to QA translations we ship?
  4. How do we reconcile upstream strings with existing custom overrides?
  5. Do we need ICU/pluralization or RTL correctness beyond Laravel's built-in plural rules?
  6. Is laravel-lang/common the intended long-term dependency rather than the legacy caouecs package?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Pure PHP + JSON; compatible across Laravel 5.x–11 via the matching major release. Works with __(), @lang, trans_choice, validation messages, and coexists with spatie/laravel-translation-loader or DB-backed translation if we later move.

Migration path

  • Greenfield / modern: composer require --dev laravel-lang/common, then php artisan lang:add {locale} for only the locales we ship.
  • Legacy: composer require caouecs/laravel-lang:~7.0 (Laravel 6–8 era), then copy src/{locale} into resources/lang. This is a supported-today, stranded-tomorrow path — plan the rename now.
  • If migrating from the legacy namespace: swap package, re-add locales, and diff existing overrides back in.

Compatibility

  • Directory move resources/lang → lang in Laravel 9 is the main breakage. Decide once: adopt lang/ and delete the custom path binding in AppServiceProvider.
  • JSON attribute files merge into the same {locale}.json the app uses — reconcile keys rather than overwriting.
  • Avoid publishing all ~80 locales; ship only the supported set to keep the repo and review burden bounded.

Sequencing

  1. Inventory current lang files, custom overrides, and active locales.
  2. Confirm canonical package name and version supporting our Laravel major.
  3. Install on a branch; import target locales only.
  4. Diff vendor strings against current overrides; custom wins, upstream fills gaps.
  5. Add CI check for key parity between en and each supported locale.
  6. Wire locale / fallback_locale and locale-switching tests.
  7. Document the sync cadence and owner.
  8. Decommission the legacy caouecs path.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Zero runtime maintenance; real content maintenance. Each Laravel minor adds validation rule messages. Assign an owner and a quarterly (or per-Laravel-upgrade) re-sync. Because files are vendored, upgrades arrive as large diffs — review by key, not by file.

Support

  • Community-maintained, no SLA, no vendor to escalate to. The caouecs namespace is legacy and effectively superseded; there is no security patching requirement, but also no guarantee of future fixes. Internal support cost sits entirely with the team that owns i18n.

Scaling

  • Trivially scalable technically: static arrays, opcache-friendly, no I/O or DB. The scaling constraint is organizational — each added locale is another file set to keep synchronized and QA. Gate locale additions on business demand.
  • If translator workflows (Crowdin/Lokalise) arrive later, these files are already the export/import format, so no re-platforming.

Failure modes

  1. Missing keys → silent fallback to English; non-English users see mixed-language UI, invisible without tests.
  2. Wrong Laravel major → files land in the wrong directory or keys aren't recognized.
  3. Package-name confusion → Composer resolves a legacy version that doesn't support the current framework.
  4. Upgrade overwrites customized overrides → localized regressions ship unnoticed.
  5. Pluralization/RTL edge cases in some locales degrade message quality.
  6. Vendored files drift from upstream; composer update doesn't touch them, so staleness is undetectable by tooling alone.

Ramp-up

  • Developer effort is near zero — hours to integrate. The cost is organizational: deciding supported locales, sourcing translation review, and defining an explicit sync process. Given the metadata anomaly on this record, spend the first hour verifying the repository is the live one before any code is written.
