Cache Laravel Package

cakephp/cache

Cache is CakePHP's caching library, offering a consistent API for storing and retrieving data across backends such as File, Redis, Memcached, APCu, and Array. It supports PSR-16 simple caching, flexible configuration, and easy integration with CakePHP applications.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit: Poor for a Laravel-first stack. cakephp/cache is a read-only subtree split of CakePHP, built around CakePHP conventions such as Cake\Cache\Cache and Configure. Laravel expects Illuminate\Contracts\Cache\Repository, CacheManager, Laravel cache stores, and config/cache.php. Integration would require an adapter or anti-corruption layer; it does not plug into Laravel’s cache contracts natively.

Integration feasibility: Technically feasible but non-idiomatic. Composer installation may pull cakephp/core or related CakePHP dependencies, and runtime configuration would sit outside Laravel’s cache configuration. A wrapper could expose basic get/set/delete/clear operations to Laravel, but then the team maintains two cache abstractions. For ordinary Laravel caching, this package adds no capability over native Redis, Memcached, database, file, or array stores.

Technical risk: Medium-high. The package is a read-only split, so issue tracking, release cadence, and security fixes are governed upstream by CakePHP. Low independent adoption signals—50 stars and a 0.46 score—are weak evidence for standalone use, though they are partly explained by the split-repo model. The NOASSERTION license requires legal verification before production use. Other risks include PHP/Laravel version mismatch, transitive CakePHP dependencies, serialization/key/TTL semantic differences, static configuration behavior under Octane or queue workers, and duplicated observability.

TPM recommendation: Do not adopt cakephp/cache as the primary cache layer for a Laravel application. Standardize on Laravel’s native cache. Consider this package only for a bounded CakePHP-to-Laravel migration or a specific CakePHP cache engine that cannot be replaced, and then isolate it behind a Laravel adapter with explicit exit criteria.

Key questions: What Laravel requirement cannot be met by Illuminate\Cache? Is this for a temporary CakePHP-to-Laravel migration? Which backend and PHP extension are required? What is the verified license and upstream security policy? Which Laravel/PHP versions are supported? Who owns the adapter and upgrades? Will it share Redis with Laravel cache, and how are keys/prefixes isolated? Does it need PSR-6/PSR-16 compatibility? What are rollback and exit criteria?

Integration Approach

Stack fit: Low. Treat cakephp/cache as a foreign component, not a Laravel package. Prefer Laravel cache stores. If a CakePHP-specific engine is genuinely required, wrap only that engine behind Laravel’s Repository contract; do not expose Cake\Cache\Cache throughout application code.

Migration path: For a CakePHP-to-Laravel migration, use this package only as a transitional compatibility layer. Map CakePHP cache configurations to Laravel store configurations, normalize key namespaces and TTLs, and run dual-read/dual-write only for a bounded period if cache warmup or rollback requires it. For greenfield Laravel work, do not introduce it; if already present, migrate to Laravel cache.

Compatibility: Verify Composer resolution against the target Laravel and PHP versions and required extensions such as Redis, Memcached, or APCu. Confirm transitive cakephp/* dependencies and conflicts. Confirm serialization format, key validation rules, TTL behavior, and clear/flush semantics. Resolve the license before any production use.

Sequencing: 1) Clarify the business need and license; 2) run a time-boxed proof of concept with an adapter and dedicated cache namespace; 3) benchmark and failure-test against Laravel’s native cache; 4) complete security/dependency review; 5) make a decision gate—adopt only with an owner and exit plan; 6) otherwise standardize on Laravel cache and document the rejected alternative.

Operational Impact

Maintenance: Higher than native Laravel cache. The read-only split tracks CakePHP releases, so upgrades are coupled to upstream CakePHP cadence and may not align with Laravel’s release cycle. Internal ownership is required for the adapter, dependency updates, and CVE monitoring.

Support: Community support comes through CakePHP channels, not Laravel. The low star count and score indicate limited standalone community validation; because this is a split repo, support signals should be read from the upstream CakePHP project rather than this repository alone.

Scaling: Backends such as Redis and Memcached can scale, but the package does not improve Laravel’s existing scaling model. Duplicate cache clients and connections, key collisions, and inconsistent prefixing are the main scaling risks. Use a dedicated Redis database or strict prefix, and monitor hit rate, latency, memory, and evictions.

Failure modes: Misconfigured stores, missing PHP extensions, incompatible serialization, TTL/key semantic mismatches, cache flushes affecting unrelated Laravel keys, static/global configuration surprises under Octane or long-running queue workers, and delayed upstream patches. Cache failures should degrade to an application fallback rather than cause an outage.

Ramp-up: Moderate for CakePHP-experienced engineers and high for Laravel-only teams. Developers must learn CakePHP cache conventions, configuration, and backend behavior while also understanding the adapter boundary. The onboarding cost is difficult to justify unless a concrete migration or backend requirement exists.
