Crater Laravel Package

bytefury/crater

Crater is a free, open-source invoicing and billing app for freelancers and small businesses, built on Laravel and Vue. Create invoices, estimates, expenses, payments, and reports, with multi-currency support, recurring invoices, and a REST API.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. fork for billing/invoicing. Crater gives a concrete, inspectable scope baseline — invoices, estimates/quotes, recurring invoices, payment recording, tax profiles, multi-currency, customer portal, roles/permissions — so "build" can be estimated against a real feature list instead of a blank page.
  • Billing v1 roadmap sequencing. Use its module map to separate MVP (invoice CRUD, PDF generation, payment recording, customer records) from later scope (recurring, estimate→invoice conversion, multi-currency, custom fields, portal).
  • Self-hosted / white-label product line. A viable base only if your distribution model is on-prem or single-tenant, where AGPL source-disclosure obligations are already satisfied by shipping to the customer.
  • Internal finance-ops tooling. Invoicing for a business unit or subsidiary where SaaS procurement is blocked or data residency rules apply.
  • Domain modeling input. Even without shipping Crater, extract its invoice/line-item/tax/payment data model and state transitions into your own architecture — the cheapest artifact here is the design, not the code.
  • Competitive and pricing benchmarking. Informs feature-parity targets and price positioning against the open-source long tail.
  • A forced risk decision. The 2022-03 last release means someone must explicitly own the fork — upgrades, patching, PHP/Laravel currency — before this appears on a roadmap.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You need invoicing domain coverage quickly and the team is Laravel-fluent.
  • Deployment is self-hosted, on-prem, or single-tenant internal — the AGPL §13 network clause doesn't create the same exposure.
  • You accept ownership: forking, dependency modernization, security patching, and a release cadence.
  • You need a prototype to validate invoice workflows with finance users before committing budget.
  • A budget exists for a commercial license if the end state is closed-source SaaS.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You plan a closed-source or multi-tenant SaaS. AGPL-3.0 plus a 2022 codebase is a combined legal and maintenance liability unless a commercial license is purchased.
  • You require current framework support or active security releases.
  • You need compliance-grade output: EU Peppol / e-invoicing mandates, India GST e-invoicing, country-specific tax filing, SOC 2 posture.
  • You need broad payment gateway coverage, dunning at scale, revenue recognition, or deep subscription billing.
  • You need a support SLA or contractual vendor accountability.
  • Differentiation is the goal. The low opportunity score reflects a crowded field — Invoice Ninja, Akaunting, InvoicePlane, and free tiers from Wave/Zoho — so advantage has to come from vertical workflow fit, not feature count.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives. Crater is a free, well-starred invoicing application we can use as a starting point rather than building billing from zero. It front-loads months of scope definition, data modeling, and UI work at near-zero acquisition cost. Two costs travel with it: the AGPL-3.0 license obligates us to publish source for any modified version we operate as a hosted service, and the last release was March 2022, so we inherit an upgrade and security-patching burden. Recommendation: treat Crater as a scoped blueprint and a candidate for internal or self-hosted tooling — not as the foundation of a commercial SaaS unless we buy a commercial license and assign a named maintainer.

For engineering. It's a Laravel + Vue monolith with a clean invoice/estimate/payment domain we can lift. Expect to modernize PHP, Laravel, and third-party dependencies before production, audit payment and mail integrations against current APIs, and establish an explicit patch cadence. If we fork, we own the entire security surface; if we only borrow the data model, we capture most of the planning value at almost no cost or risk.

Decision requested. Approve a one-to-two week spike to (a) run Crater against our real finance workflows and (b) extract its domain model for our own build — before we commit to either path.
