Laravel Assignment Laravel Package

byrcsc/laravel-assignment

A Laravel package for managing assignments between Eloquent models, letting you attach, reassign, and track assigned records through a simple, configurable API. Lightweight, flexible, and easy to drop into any Laravel project for quick assignment handling.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit — This is a domain-service package layered on Eloquent: a profile abstraction exposing offerTtl(), a polymorphic assignable model, a role/slot concept where null denotes the default slot, an offer object with TTL semantics, a queue table, a offer_expired notification, and an artisan command (assignment:tick) alongside autoAssign()/flushQueue() entrypoints. That shape fits Laravel applications needing time-boxed ownership handoff (dispatch routing, on-call rotation, lead/marketplace claims). The single-default-slot-plus-named-roles model is opinionated but coherent — validate it against our domain before committing.

Integration feasibility — v1.0.1 introduces no new dependencies, config surface, or migrations; all four items are internal behavior corrections. Integration cost is low greenfield, but non-trivial for existing adopters because three of the four changes convert silent behavior into exceptions or new events.

Technical risk — This is a patch version carrying effectively breaking semantic changes:

  1. TTL below one second now throws InvalidArgumentException, and that propagates through autoAssign(), flushQueue(), and assignment:tick. A profile returning 0 from offerTtl() now hard-fails an entire queue drain rather than producing a harmless pre-expired offer. That converts a single config defect into a fleet-wide scheduled-job outage.
  2. Assigning or offering over an expired offer now dispatches OfferExpired, previously silent. Any listener that notifies, audits, or reassigns will receive events it has never seen from this path, and expiry now has two dispatch paths (assign-over-expired and tick) — duplicate-notification risk is real.
  3. Empty-string role now throws on read and write. The fix is correct ('' previously aliased the default slot on write but not on read, so assignee('') and assignee() disagreed), but any caller passing unvalidated role strings from form input, API params, or imports will now 500 where it previously misbehaved quietly.
  4. Orphaned queue entries (assignable model deleted) are now deleted by flushQueue()/assignment:tick. Desired, but it is destructive cleanup embedded in a routine command — confirm observability.

Key questions — Is the offerTtl() <= 0 throw intended to be fatal for the whole tick (fail-fast with alerting) or should it isolate per item and skip? Is OfferExpired guaranteed at-least-once or exactly-once across the two dispatch paths? Do we own role-string normalization, or is a helper expected? What happens to existing rows with role = '' — rewritten, or do they begin throwing on read? Are these changes documented as breaking for upgraders from v1.0.0?

Integration Approach

Stack fit — Standard Laravel: Eloquent models, a queue-table migration plus polymorphic columns, notifications via the framework's notification contract, and a scheduler entry for assignment:tick. No coupling to queues, broadcasting, or external services implied.

Migration path — Treat v1.0.1 as a minor-breaking upgrade despite the patch number. Pre-upgrade: audit every offerTtl() implementation for values ≤ 0, grep for role writes sourced from unvalidated input, audit OfferExpired listeners for idempotency, and remediate legacy role = '' rows in data before deploying code. Pin the exact version; validate in staging against a production-shaped dataset, since orphaned queue rows are common in real data and this release changes how they behave.

Compatibility — API-stable (no signature changes), semantics-incompatible. The highest-probability production break is assignee('') now throwing where it previously returned something. No deprecations to track.

Sequencing — (1) Pin v1.0.1 and read the source for exact exception paths. (2) Add boundary validation for role strings and a guard/default in every offerTtl() profile. (3) Make OfferExpired listeners idempotent, keyed on offer + recipient. (4) Backfill/clean '' role rows. (5) Deploy with the version bump; run assignment:tick manually in staging against a snapshot and diff dispatched notifications. (6) Re-enable the scheduler under monitoring.

Operational Impact

Maintenance — Low ongoing surface; narrow domain library. The real cost is owning the invariant set it now enforces (TTL ≥ 1s, non-empty role, no orphaned rows) at our input boundaries rather than inside the package.

Support — Burden shifts from "an assignment silently didn't happen" to explicit exceptions — better for diagnosability, worse for user-facing 500s and failed scheduled jobs. The runbook must map InvalidArgumentException from assignment:tick to the offending profile or role value.

Scaling — flushQueue() and assignment:tick now do per-entry existence checks plus deletes, adding write volume proportional to dead rows. Acceptable at moderate depth, but the tick is a batch job with blast radius: one bad profile fails the whole run. Ask for chunking and per-item error isolation if queue depth grows.

Failure modes — (a) A single zero-TTL profile halts the entire scheduled tick, stopping assignments fleet-wide — highest severity. (b) '' roles from API/import produce read and write 500s. (c) Duplicate or unexpected offer_expired notifications if listeners aren't idempotent. (d) Loss of auditability if orphan deletion removes the only record of a pending assignment — confirm logging. (e) Two expiry dispatch paths warrant explicit race/reentrancy testing.

Ramp-up — Small API surface (offer, assign, expire, tick, flush); an engineer is productive in under a day. Conceptual cost is the default-vs-named slot model and TTL semantics, both of which this release clarifies. Budget half a day for the upgrade audit and a staging validation run.
