Admin Auth Laravel Package

brackets/admin-auth

A Laravel package for adding a dedicated admin authentication layer to your app. It provides an admin guard, login and logout flows, and middleware to protect admin routes, with configurable settings for integrating admin access into existing Laravel projects.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for admin-panel authentication. The package supplies the login, logout, forgot-password, reset-password, and account-activation surface for the brackets/admin-ui admin panel. If we adopt that admin UI, this is scaffolding we do not have to write or maintain ourselves.
  • Suite-level adoption decision, not a package-level one. This package is not independently useful — it is the auth interface for brackets/admin-ui. The real decision is whether we adopt the BRACKETS admin suite; this package is a bundled consequence, not a standalone evaluation.
  • Roadmap / sprint scoping. Choosing it removes a small but real chunk of work (auth controllers, routes, views, and their styling) from an internal-tooling milestone and keeps auth visually consistent with the rest of the admin panel.
  • Use-case fit. Well-suited to internal back-office tools, CMSs, ops dashboards, and internal admin panels. Explicitly not aimed at customer-facing authentication or public sign-up flows.
  • Technical debt and exit planning. With 7 stars, zero dependents, and a last release of October 2023, adopting it implies a decision to pin the version and potentially fork. That tradeoff belongs in the architecture and dependency-risk discussion, not just the feature ticket.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt it when:

  • You are already committing to brackets/admin-ui and want authentication that matches the suite's layout, routes, and conventions without custom glue.
  • You need conventional email/password authentication with password reset and account activation for an internal admin tool — nothing more exotic.
  • You accept a small, single-maintainer ecosystem and are prepared to pin versions and maintain a fork if upstream stalls.
  • Your Laravel version falls within the package's declared Composer constraints — verify this before committing, given the 2023 release date.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not adopting brackets/admin-ui. For standalone authentication, Laravel's first-party starter kits (Breeze, Jetstream, Fortify) are the better-supported default.
  • You need SSO/SAML/OIDC, multi-factor authentication, passkeys, social login, or API token auth. This package does not cover those, and bolting them on likely erases the time saved.
  • You need long-term vendor support, an active community, or documented maintenance commitments. Low stars and zero dependents mean no network effect and no safety net.
  • The surface is customer-facing or otherwise security-critical and you are not prepared to review and own the auth flows internally.
  • You are running a Laravel version newer than the package supports and cannot wait for or contribute an update.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, purpose-built authentication component that ships with the BRACKETS admin panel. It is not a standalone product and should not be judged on its own — its value is time-to-market. If we adopt that admin panel, this package gives us login, logout, password reset, and account activation already styled and wired up, saving roughly a sprint of routine scaffolding work. The caveat is maturity: it is a low-community, single-maintainer package with no downstream dependents and a last release in late 2023. That is an acceptable risk for an internal tool where we control the deployment and can pin or fork, but it is not something we should put in front of customers without taking ownership of the security review ourselves.

For engineering: Treat this as a sub-decision of the admin-ui choice, not a separate dependency review. The code is a thin, conventional layer over Laravel's auth — low implementation surprise, low conceptual risk. The real risk is upstream drift: confirm Laravel version compatibility against the 2023 release, audit the password-reset and account-activation flows, and budget for vendoring or forking rather than assuming future updates. If we are not adopting brackets/admin-ui, skip this entirely and use Laravel's official auth starter kit — we would be trading a well-maintained first-party option for a marginal styling benefit.
