Driver Twilio Laravel Package

botman/driver-twilio

Twilio driver for BotMan that connects your PHP chatbot to Twilio SMS, letting you send and receive messages through Twilio phone numbers. Install via Composer and wire it into BotMan to handle SMS conversations.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Channel expansion without a rewrite. If the product already runs on BotMan, this driver lets the same conversation classes, middleware, and intent handlers serve SMS/MMS. That makes "add SMS" a configuration-and-credentials task rather than a new integration project — a meaningful roadmap accelerator for teams with an existing bot surface.
  • Build vs. buy on the glue layer. The alternative is hand-rolling Twilio webhook ingestion, request parsing, signature validation, and outbound REST calls. This package is a thin MIT-licensed adapter, so the buy decision is really "adopt a small dependency" versus "own ~a few hundred lines of messaging plumbing forever." For most teams the buy/borrow side wins on time-to-first-message.
  • Use-case prioritization for SMS. SMS/MMS is the right channel where reachability, low friction, and no-app-install matter: appointment reminders, delivery and order status, two-way support triage, field/ops coordination, and reaching users on low-end or low-connectivity devices. It is the wrong channel for rich UI, long content, or high-frequency marketing blasts.
  • Architecture standardization. Adopting it is an implicit decision to keep BotMan as the conversation abstraction layer across channels (Web, Slack, Telegram, Twilio) rather than writing channel-specific code paths. That's a maintainability bet worth naming explicitly.
  • Vendor abstraction for Twilio. Because the driver isolates Twilio-specific calls, it supports a "Twilio today, swap CPaaS later" posture — provided engineering wraps the driver behind an internal interface rather than calling it from domain code.
  • Scope discipline. This is messaging only. It does not give you Twilio Voice, WhatsApp templating, RCS, campaign scheduling, or contact-list management. Roadmap items in those areas need separate evaluation and should not be assumed to ride along.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You are already committed to BotMan 2.x and want SMS/MMS as an additional channel with minimal new code.
  • SMS is a secondary channel — transactional or conversational, low to moderate volume — not the core product surface.
  • Your team is small and would rather inherit webhook + REST plumbing than write it.
  • MIT licensing and a small, forkable code surface fit your risk tolerance better than a heavyweight vendor SDK.
  • You need both text and simple media replies, and Twilio is already your CPaaS of record.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You are not on BotMan. Adopting a framework just to use its driver is backwards; use the official Twilio SDK or a Laravel notification channel instead.
  • You need active maintenance guarantees. Last release is 2018 and the project has ~12 stars — treat it as effectively unmaintained. Verify PHP and framework compatibility yourself; assume you may need to fork and patch.
  • Webhook security matters to you out of the box. Confirm Twilio request-signature validation is present and correct before exposing the endpoint publicly; if it isn't, that's a required patch, not a nice-to-have.
  • You need high-throughput or broadcast messaging, short codes / toll-free throughput planning, or 10DLC-style sender registration and compliance workflows. Those belong in Twilio tooling or a dedicated messaging platform, not a conversation driver.
  • You need voice, WhatsApp, RCS, rich templates, agent handoff/desk integration, delivery analytics, or per-message cost controls.
  • You want a supported, documented dependency with a security response process.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a small, free, MIT-licensed connector that lets our existing bot answer and reply over SMS and MMS through Twilio. It is the cheapest possible way to test whether text messaging is a channel our users actually want — days of work instead of weeks, and no new vendor relationship if Twilio is already in place. The caveats are candid: the package is old (last release 2018) and has essentially no community behind it. That is acceptable because it is a thin adapter, not a platform — worst case we fork it and maintain a small amount of code ourselves. My recommendation is a timeboxed proof of concept on one low-risk flow (e.g., status notifications with a reply option), with a go/no-go gate on deliverability, message cost per resolved interaction, and whether users engage. We should not put regulated, high-volume, or marketing messaging on this path without a separate compliance and throughput review.

For engineering: Treat this as a thin, replaceable adapter, not an architectural commitment. Pin the dependency, audit it for PHP and framework compatibility on day one, and add Twilio request-signature validation at the webhook boundary if it is missing. Wrap the driver behind an internal messaging interface so Twilio can be swapped or the driver forked without touching conversation logic. Keep SMS-specific concerns — 160-character segmentation, MMS size limits, opt-in/opt-out handling, idempotency on webhook retries, and outbound rate limiting — in our code, not assumed from the package. Instrument delivery failures and per-message cost from the first deploy so the product decision is made on data rather than on the driver's convenience.
