Google Drive Docs Bundle Laravel Package

borsche/google-drive-docs-bundle

A Symfony bundle that turns a Google Shared Drive into a document workspace inside your own app. Users browse folders, create and edit real Google Sheets/Docs, and manage access, while documents stay in Google and editors render in an embedded iframe.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs buy for search/index sync. The package ships its own credentialed live verification harness and treats that harness as a product surface. Adopting it means inheriting that discipline; building in-house means you own the "green but did nothing" failure mode yourself.
  • Upgrade and release policy. v1.1.7 is a patch with no API change and a roughly halved distribution archive. It's a low-risk default upgrade, and a priority one if artifact size affects you (container layers, Lambda bundles, CI caches).
  • Index freshness SLOs and timeout budgets. The 40s → 100s change was derived from observed spread, not the average — CI and local both caught up in ~5s, and the failure was a tail case. That's a directly reusable template for setting our own propagation budgets: instrument per-index latency, print it every run, set the budget from the tail.
  • Pipeline health semantics for secret-gated jobs. The fix decides whether a skipped check is a pass or a failure, per repository rather than per event. Useful precedent when we review our own scheduled jobs that no-op when credentials are absent after a rotation or in a new environment.
  • Test strategy and vendor/fork management. Clarifies what happens to consumers running forks or mirrored CI — upstream warnings, canonical-repo failures — which matters if we vendor or mirror dependencies.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You run Laravel against an eventually-consistent index and correctness depends on the changes feed catching up; the vendor has already measured how long that takes and publishes the numbers each run.
  • You weight dependency maturity by CI rigor — this release is evidence the project distinguishes a canary that measured from one that merely passed.
  • Install footprint or cold-start time is a real cost in your deploy target.
  • You consume the project through a fork or mirrored pipeline and don't want to be penalized for not configuring its secrets.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need strong or read-after-write consistency rather than eventual.
  • You cannot provision the four credentials the live suite expects, and warnings in scheduled logs would be noise rather than signal.
  • You need an explicit long-term-support or API-stability commitment; this is an actively iterated 1.x patch stream, which is healthy but not a compatibility promise.
  • Your dominant risk is tail latency at a scale this instrumentation hasn't been exercised at, or your backend isn't the one targeted.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: "Search index sync is something we can own or rent. This release is the argument for renting: the maintainers found a scheduled run that reported success while silently doing nothing — a skipped step, exit zero, three weeks of green ticks — and fixed it. In-house, that would have looked like a healthy dashboard indefinitely. It's a patch release, no API change, and the installed archive is about half the size."

Engineering: "Patch upgrade, no surface change, smaller dist. Their live suite now fails when credentials are missing on the canonical repo instead of exiting zero, names which of the four credentials are absent rather than speaking for all of them, and prints per-index catch-up times at the end of every run. The budget went from 40s to 100s because CI and local both measured ~5s and the failure was tail, not average. Two things worth copying: fail-loud behavior in our own secret-gated scheduled jobs, and setting freshness timeouts from observed spread."
