Synth Laravel Package

blinq/synth

Synth is a Laravel package for generating realistic synthetic data. Define your data shape once, then synthesize records for seeding, testing, and demos, with support for relationships, custom generators, and repeatable results.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Demo and pre-release environments. Synth's value is in producing realistic, model-aware sample data for a Laravel app without hand-writing seeders. That directly shortens the loop between "feature built" and "feature shown to stakeholders," which changes how often you can put working software in front of customers, sales, and design partners during roadmap validation.
  • Data strategy for non-production environments. Populating staging, QA, and demo tenants with realistic-but-synthetic records is a compliance-adjacent product decision: it lets you commit to "no production PII outside production" without gutting the realism your QA and sales demos depend on. If you have that commitment on a security questionnaire or DPA, this is a candidate enabler.
  • Build vs. buy for internal tooling. The alternative is a bespoke seeder/factory library maintained by your team. A dev-only, MIT-licensed package is a cheap way to avoid owning that code — but only if the adoption cost (evaluation, wrapping, abandonment risk) is lower than building. With 275 stars, zero dependents, and a last release in July 2023, the honest framing is "low-cost experiment," not "strategic dependency."
  • Roadmap scoping of data realism as a feature. If realistic fixtures unblock self-serve demos, partner sandboxes, or a trial environment, seed-data quality becomes a product surface rather than an engineering chore, and deserves explicit prioritization.
  • Test-automation coverage decisions. Richer fixtures enable broader end-to-end and edge-case testing, which informs how much confidence you can claim per release and what quality bar to set for go/no-go.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when all of the following hold:

  • The product is Laravel/Eloquent-centric and the need is confined to local, staging, demo, or test environments.
  • The current bottleneck is realism and volume of seed data — your factories exist but produce thin or unconvincing records, and demos look like demos.
  • You can treat it as a timeboxed spike (1–3 days) with a defined fallback to native factories/Faker, and wrap it behind your own seeding interface so it is replaceable.
  • A dev-only dependency is acceptable to your security posture (verify whether any data leaves the machine or hits a third-party API before sign-off).
  • You can tolerate a package that is effectively unmaintained: no vendor SLA, no support contract, no downstream ecosystem validating upgrades.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need deterministic, reproducible fixtures for CI. Synthetic generation that varies per run fights snapshot tests and flaky-test triage.
  • Native Factories + Faker + a small set of hand-authored "hero" fixtures already clear the realism bar — that is the cheapest option and is already maintained.
  • The requirement is production data generation, anonymization of real production data, or data-masking for compliance. That is a different problem class with audit and legal implications; do not stretch a dev utility into it.
  • You require a maintained dependency, security patching, or a vendor to escalate to. The stale release and thin metadata ("This is my package synth", no dependents) are disqualifying for a foundational role.
  • The stack is not Laravel, or you are mid-migration and would be buying a dependency you plan to discard.
  • Model data is commercially sensitive and the package's mechanism involves any external service — a hard stop for regulated or enterprise customers.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is a low-cost, MIT-licensed Laravel utility that generates realistic synthetic data, so we can demo and test the product with convincing data without copying production customer records into staging. The business case is speed — faster, more frequent stakeholder and customer demos, and a defensible "no real customer data outside production" position on security reviews. The recommendation is a timeboxed 1–3 day evaluation, not adoption: the package has no downstream users in the ecosystem and has not shipped a release since mid-2023, so we will prove it out behind our own abstraction and keep native Laravel factories as the fallback. Expected spend is measured in engineer-days; the downside if it is abandoned is a revert to tooling we already have.

For engineering: Treat this as a throwaway-able dev dependency. Scope a spike that (1) generates data across two or three of our most relational models, (2) confirms nothing leaves the environment and that the mechanism is auditable, (3) checks compatibility with our current Laravel/PHP versions since the last release predates our upgrade, and (4) demonstrates the fallback: the same fixtures expressible as factories. Contain it behind an internal seeder interface so removal is a one-file change, keep it out of production dependency graphs and CI determinism paths, and document the pin. If the spike passes, we get faster demo environments for roughly a day of work; if not, we lose the day and keep factories — and we have a documented reason not to revisit it.
