bitwasp/bech32
A pure PHP implementation of bech32 and native SegWit address encoding. Use it standalone to encode and decode bech32 strings, including native SegWit addresses, in legacy codebases that have not yet upgraded to bitwasp/bitcoin.

Look elsewhere when:
bitwasp/bitcoin itself or a maintained alternative, and wrap whichever you choose behind an internal AddressCodec interface. For executives: This is a tiny, public-domain-licensed utility that lets us handle modern Bitcoin addresses without writing cryptographic checksum code ourselves. Cost is near zero and it removes a class of "we shipped a wrong address" bugs. The trade-off is maintenance risk: the project is small, lightly used, and targets older PHP versions, so I'd recommend it only as a wrapped, pinned dependency — not as a long-term platform commitment. Decision needed: is crypto address support on the roadmap at all?
For engineering: Pure PHP, no extensions, deterministic bech32 encode/decode plus SegWit address formatting. Two caveats: (1) it supports PHP 5.6–7.2 only, so PHP 8 compatibility is on us; (2) it is a transitional shim intended to be absorbed into bitwasp/bitcoin. Proposal: wrap it behind an internal codec interface with our own tests against BIP-173 vectors, pin the version, and revisit if we move to PHP 8 or need bech32m.
