Laravel Tenantable Laravel Package

binarcode/laravel-tenantable

A Laravel package for adding multi-tenancy to Eloquent models. Apply the Tenantable trait to scope queries and relationships to the current tenant, with support for tenant resolution and data isolation. Keeps tenant-aware model code simple while helping prevent cross-tenant access.

Technical Evaluation

Evidence base: No prior assessment exists; this establishes the baseline. The only input is a single release line — v2.7.0 Added: Laravel 13. Treat conclusions below as directional and validate against the package's repository (composer.json, CI matrix, CHANGELOG) before committing.

  • Architecture fit: Shipping framework support as a minor version (2.7.0, not 3.0) signals maintainers consider Laravel 13 compatibility non-breaking, and that the package tracks Laravel's annual major cadence. That is the profile of a package intended to sit inside a standard service-provider / package-discovery integration. Unverified, but the versioning discipline is a positive signal.
  • Integration feasibility: Low effort to adopt — a minor bump on an existing constraint. The real cost sits on our side: upgrading the host application to Laravel 13 (PHP floor, deprecated APIs, ecosystem dependencies) is the dominant workstream, not this package.
  • Technical risk:
    • False compatibility. The most common failure pattern is widening composer.json to ^13 without adding 13 to the CI matrix. A relaxed constraint is not tested support. This is the primary thing to verify.
    • Silent support drop. Confirm 2.7.0 still declares support for the Laravel version we run today; a minor release can narrow as well as widen.
    • Pre-release framework. If Laravel 13 is not yet GA, "support" may mean dev-stability constraints leaking into a stable tag, which can destabilise our lockfile resolution.
    • Transitive blockers. Our other packages may not yet permit Laravel 13, making this capability unusable in practice regardless of this release.
  • Key questions:
    1. Is 2.7.0 a tested support claim or a constraint relaxation? Is Laravel 13 in the CI matrix?
    2. Does 2.7.0 preserve support for our current Laravel version, or does it supersede it?
    3. What is the PHP minimum, and does it move in this release?
    4. Is Laravel 13 GA, RC, or unreleased at the time of this tag?
    5. What is the release history and cadence — is this package consistently early, late, or absent on framework majors?

Verdict: A favourable but thin signal. It warrants adoption on a trial basis, not an unqualified endorsement until the CI/constraint question is answered.

Integration Approach

  • Stack fit: Good fit if we are on a currently supported Laravel major and intend to move to 13 within the next two cycles. If we have no Laravel 13 plans, this release is a no-op for us and should not drive action.
  • Migration path:
    1. Diff composer.json between 2.6.x and 2.7.0. Determine whether the change is additive (^11 || ^12 || ^13) or a replacement.
    2. Upgrade the package alone on our current framework version first — this isolates any regression introduced by the widened constraints from the framework upgrade itself.
    3. Upgrade the host application to Laravel 13 as a separate, later change once transitive dependencies permit it.
  • Compatibility checks: Verify lockfile resolution succeeds on both our current and target framework versions; scan the dependency tree for packages still pinning ^11/^12; confirm no new PHP extension or platform requirement appears.
  • Sequencing: Package review → package bump on current framework → CI green → framework upgrade spike in a branch → production. Do not couple the package bump and the framework bump in a single PR; if something breaks, we need to know which one caused it.
  • Rollback: A minor bump is cheap to revert; keep the prior tag pinned until the current-framework regression pass is clean.

Operational Impact

  • Maintenance: The strongest takeaway. A maintainer shipping framework support promptly reduces the risk of us being stranded on an EOL Laravel version later. Verify this is a pattern rather than a one-off.
  • Support: Release notes give no view on maintainer count, issue responsiveness, or security disclosure policy. For a dependency in the request path, those need checking before promotion to production-critical.
  • Scaling: No evidence either way. Framework compatibility does not imply performance characteristics; if this package is on a hot path, benchmark separately — this release says nothing about throughput or memory.
  • Failure modes to watch:
    • Runtime errors surfacing only under Laravel 13 because support was declared but untested.
    • Lockfile churn from dev-stability constraints if 13 is pre-GA.
    • Our upgrade blocked indefinitely by a different dependency, leaving us holding a capability we cannot use.
    • Narrowed support for older Laravel versions discovered only when a teammate's environment breaks.
  • Ramp-up: Negligible for the package itself — an afternoon to review the diff and run the current-framework regression suite. Budget the real effort against the Laravel 13 application upgrade, which this release enables but does not perform.
