Filament Draftable Laravel Package

benjaminhansen/filament-draftable

Filament Draftable adds draft and publish support to Filament resources: save unpublished versions of any record, keep iterating in the admin panel, and publish when ready. Drafts stay hidden from the front end, so editors can stage content changes safely before going live.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit. The package is a Filament extension for Laravel — it plugs into the admin-panel layer via a service provider and a plugin class registered on the panel provider, rather than introducing a parallel UI or data stack. Fit is strong if the team already operates Filament panels; if the team is not on Filament, this package is out of scope entirely.

Integration feasibility. Composer-based install plus a registration line in the PanelProvider is the expected shape, which keeps the integration surface small. Feasibility is gated entirely on version constraints: this release explicitly targets Filament v4 and v5, so any team on v3 is either excluded or must upgrade Filament first. PHP and Laravel floors must be confirmed before committing.

Technical risk. The dominant risk is that v1.1.0.0 is a one-line release note. It is not possible to tell from the note whether this release adds v4/v5 support alongside v3, or replaces v3 support — the latter would be a breaking change shipped under a minor/patch-looking version number. Secondary risk is dual-major support itself: two dependency trees, likely conditional code paths, and a doubled CI matrix, with the attendant possibility of subtle behavioral divergence between the v4 and v5 paths. The four-part version scheme (1.1.0.0) is also non-standard and warrants confirmation of the project's semver policy.

Key questions.

  • Does v1.1.0.0 drop Filament v3 support? If so, why is it not a major version bump?
  • What are the supported PHP, Laravel, and Livewire ranges?
  • Is v4/v5 support a single codebase with runtime conditionals, or separate release branches?
  • Is there an active CI matrix covering both Filament majors?
  • Is there an upgrade guide from the prior release, and does this release require republishing config or migrations?
  • What is the maintainer count, release cadence, and bus factor?
  • Which other Filament plugins in our panel declare version constraints that could collide?

Integration Approach

Stack fit. Assuming Laravel 11/12, PHP 8.2+, and Filament v4 or v5, the package slots in through Composer plus a single plugin registration. Low integration surface is the main attraction here.

Migration path. Establish the current Filament version before anything else. If the panel is on v3, upgrade Filament to v4 first and treat this package as a follow-on; if already on v4, adoption is likely a constraint bump and a composer update, with verification that no config or migrations need republishing. Pin the exact package version and commit the lockfile so the upgrade is reversible.

Compatibility. Check transitive constraints against Filament core and Livewire — Filament majors frequently move the PHP floor, so a Filament v5 bump can cascade into a runtime upgrade. The classic failure mode is a panel with a mixed set of plugins where some declare v4-only and others v5-only; that combination will not resolve. Inventory every Filament plugin and its declared constraints before attempting adoption.

Sequencing.

  1. Inventory Filament plugins and their version constraints.
  2. Upgrade Filament core in an isolated branch; run panel smoke tests (resource CRUD, auth, custom pages, widgets).
  3. Only then add or bump this package.
  4. Validate in staging against a production-like dataset.
  5. Defer Filament v5 adoption to a separate change once v4 is stable.

Never bump Filament core and this package in the same commit — it makes rollback and blame attribution impossible.

Operational Impact

Maintenance. Dual-major support doubles the maintenance surface: two dependency trees, two CI legs, and bug reports that may only reproduce on one branch. Confirm upstream actually runs that matrix; if not, we inherit the compatibility-testing burden and should budget for it explicitly.

Support. One-line release notes suggest thin documentation and no formal support channel. Assume self-support. Check issue-tracker responsiveness, changelog discipline, and whether a published upgrade guide exists — these are better predictors of long-term viability than the feature itself.

Scaling. Runtime scale is a non-issue for an admin-plane plugin. The real scaling concern is developer-facing: every additional Filament plugin multiplies the constraint-conflict surface at each Filament upgrade. Maintaining a plugin inventory with pinned constraints is the mitigant.

Failure modes.

  • Composer resolution failure across a mixed v4/v5 plugin set — blocks all Filament upgrades, not just this package.
  • Silent behavioral divergence between the v4 and v5 code paths.
  • v3 support dropped under a minor-looking version, breaking composer update in CI.
  • Config or migration republish conflicts during upgrade.
  • Panel-wide outage from a Filament core bump landing in the same deploy as this package.

Ramp-up. Low for a team already fluent in Filament panel conventions — registration is a single line and the mental model is familiar. Allocate roughly half a day for the version-compatibility audit and a staging validation pass. Add time if the team is new to Filament, or if other plugins require coordinated version bumps, which is the most likely source of schedule overrun.
