Bowerphp Laravel Package

beelab/bowerphp

A PHP implementation of Bower, the front-end package manager. Install with Composer, configure your bower directory via .bowerrc, and set BOWERPHP_TOKEN to lift GitHub API rate limits. Stable but still pre-1.0, so backward compatibility isn't guaranteed.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. skip for front-end dependency management. BowerPHP is a PHP-native reimplementation of Bower, so it answers a narrow but real question: "Can we manage our bower.json assets without putting Node.js in the build image?" That is a toolchain-consolidation decision, not a feature decision — and it's the only decision this package materially informs today.
  • Toolchain sprawl / CI footprint. For PHP-only shops and slim CI runners, replacing a Node + npm/Bower install step with composer require beelab/bowerphp collapses two package managers into one. Quantifiable in CI image size, build minutes, and the number of ecosystems a new hire must learn. This is the strongest (and basically only) adoption argument.
  • Legacy roadmap and migration sequencing. If a Laravel/PHP codebase still carries a bower.json and .bowerrc, this package is a bridge artifact in a migration plan — useful for inventorying what's still Bower-managed before porting to Vite/npm, and for keeping a deprecated pipeline green while that work is scheduled.
  • Front-end dependency provenance during audits. Because it reads the same bower.json/.bowerrc contract as upstream Bower, it lets a PM keep a legacy asset manifest auditable without re-platforming the whole build — relevant to security reviews of "what third-party JS is actually shipping?"
  • Operational planning, not product planning. The README's own caveat — 60 unauthenticated GitHub API requests/hour vs. 5,000 with a BOWERPHP_TOKEN — is a capacity/config decision that must be captured in runbooks, environment provisioning, and secret management. It is a real cost of adoption for any dependency count above trivial.
  • Not supported: new feature bets. The package is archived, last release 2017-01-18, 0 dependents, MIT. It should not appear in a build-vs-buy analysis for anything greenfield; Bower itself is deprecated, so this is a shim around a deprecated target.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when all of the following are true:

  • You maintain a legacy PHP/Laravel app with an existing, working bower.json and .bowerrc that you cannot migrate this quarter.
  • Your CI/build environment is PHP-only or strictly controlled and adding Node is genuinely expensive (air-gapped, hardened images, locked-down runners).
  • The dependency footprint is small (well under the 60 req/hr anonymous GitHub limit, or you can provision BOWERPHP_TOKEN as a managed secret).
  • You accept the package is frozen: you are prepared to vendor/fork it, pin it exactly, and own any bug or security fix internally.

Look elsewhere when:

  • It's a new project. Use the framework-native path: Vite (Laravel 10+/11, Symfony), Laravel Mix for older Laravel, or webpack/Encore. Bower is deprecated upstream; reimplementing it is not a strategy.
  • You want PHP-native asset resolution without Bower: evaluate asset-packagist.org plus oomphinc/composer-installers-extender — Composer-only, actively maintained, no Node, no Bower semantics.
  • Security/maintenance posture matters (SOC2, PCI, customer-facing supply chain): an archived 2017 package with no CVE response process is a finding waiting to happen. Adopting it creates an exception you'll have to defend in every audit.
  • You need modern JS module semantics — ES modules, lockfile determinism, tree-shaking, integrity hashes. Bower's flat-file model predates all of it; BowerPHP inherits the limitation.
  • You need vendor support or an SLA. There is none.
  • You're evaluating ecosystem health as a signal: 464 stars and 0 dependents means no community safety net; the high "opportunity" score reflects an unmet need, not a viable incumbent — the market resolved that need with npm/yarn/pnpm and Vite.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executives: "This is a tactical compatibility shim, not a strategic bet. It lets us keep an existing legacy asset pipeline running inside our PHP-only build without adding a Node toolchain. Cost is near zero in licensing (MIT) and Composer-only in integration; the risk is that the project was archived in 2017 and is effectively unmaintained. Recommendation: no new adoption. Use it only as a time-boxed bridge on the legacy app, with a named owner, a pinned version, and a scheduled exit — migrating that asset manifest to our standard front-end build is the actual roadmap item."

Engineering: "One command — composer require beelab/bowerphp — gives you Bower-compatible behavior against your existing bower.json/.bowerrc, invoked from Composer scripts, so no Node in CI. Two operational notes: you'll hit the anonymous GitHub API cap at 60 requests/hour, so wire BOWERPHP_TOKEN into environment provisioning and secret management before rollout; and because the repo is archived with zero dependents, treat it as vendored code — pin the version, fork it if we need a patch, and do not expect upstream fixes. This buys us time on the legacy migration; it does not replace it."

Ask: approve as a documented technical-debt item with a sunset date, not a dependency choice — and fund the migration that removes it.
