Getting Started

  • Require the 2.1.x line: composer require balajidharma/laravel-vue-admin-panel:^2.1. The service provider is normally auto-discovered; on Laravel 11+ check bootstrap/providers.php if it is not.
  • Publish and install the scaffold using the package's documented install/publish tags (config, migrations, seeders, and front-end assets), then run php artisan migrate --seed. Follow with npm install && npm run dev (or npm run build) — the package ships Vue pages/components that your Vite build must resolve.
  • Look first at four places: the published config file (route prefix, middleware, namespace), the admin routes file, the published resources/js/Pages/... admin directory, and the menu/navigation definition. Those explain most of the package's behavior.
  • First use case: stand up a guarded /admin area with login, dashboard, user list, and role/permission management, then clone one existing CRUD screen as the template for your first domain module. That is the fastest path to a working admin surface without building auth, layout, and tables from scratch.

Implementation Patterns

  • Treat it as a scaffold rather than a black-box dependency. Day-to-day work happens in your app's published controllers, pages, and config, so commit those and review diffs on upgrade instead of editing vendor/.
  • CRUD recipe: register the route inside the admin route group → controller returns an Inertia response with paginated data → Vue page uses the package's table/form components → FormRequest handles validation → policy/permission check enforces access.
  • Authorization: put admin routes behind the package middleware and gate individual actions with permissions (typically Spatie). Share the current user's permissions as Inertia props so the UI can hide/disable actions, but always enforce on the server.
  • Navigation: add entries through the menu config/builder rather than editing the layout component. This keeps upgrades to a diff of config instead of a merge conflict in a Vue file.
  • Customization: extend the base layout/page components, override only what you need, and keep overrides in your application namespace. Use config for branding, route prefix, and middleware stack.
  • Local workflow: run the Vite dev server alongside php artisan serve/Herd; use php artisan route:list --path=admin to confirm registration, and Inertia devtools to inspect page props.
  • Deployment: npm run build, then php artisan config:cache route:cache view:cache; re-seed roles/permissions only when they actually change.

Gotchas and Tips

  • v2.1.1 is a minor release on the 2.x line, and the changelog only says "2.x changes." No breaking changes are documented, but 2.x has seen structural churn. Before upgrading from 2.0.x, diff the published files and re-read the README rather than republishing with --force.
  • Republishing assets is the most common way to lose customizations. Keep custom pages in your own namespace, publish only what you must, and use version control to see exactly what an upgrade changed.
  • After any package update: php artisan optimize:clear (or clear config/route/view/compiled individually), then rebuild assets. Stale route caches and Inertia manifests produce confusing 404s and blank pages.
  • Permission and menu caching: if role changes do not appear, clear the permission cache and any cached menu/config before debugging deeper.
  • Blank pages usually mean an Inertia page-name casing mismatch or a Vue page outside the path Inertia/Vite resolves. This bites on Linux deploys but not on macOS.
  • Config changes to route prefix or middleware will not apply while routes are cached — clear the cache first.
  • Front-end can checks are UX only; mirror every one with a server-side policy or middleware check.
  • Preferred extension points: config values, the menu builder, custom middleware, and page overrides in your app. Avoid editing vendor/.
  • When behavior is unclear, php artisan route:list, php artisan about, and Inertia devtools will localize the problem faster than reading vendor source.
