Power Enum Laravel Package

azimkordpour/power-enum

Power Enum enhances native PHP enums for Laravel with convenient helpers for labels, validation rules, Eloquent casts, and value comparisons, making status and type fields safer, more consistent, and easier to use across your application.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for finite-value domains. Any feature that models a closed set — order statuses, payment states, user roles, subscription tiers, notification channels, feature flags — can use native PHP 8.1 enums extended by this trait instead of class constants, DB lookup tables, or free-text columns. That is a real product decision: it determines whether status values are compile-time-safe and code-reviewable, or data that ops can edit at runtime.
  • Build vs. buy vs. vendor. The package is a thin helper trait over native enums (options/values/labels/name lookups, likely validation and serialization sugar). The build-vs-buy call is not "adopt vs. nothing" — it is "adopt this, copy ~40 lines of MIT code into our own App\Support\Enum trait, or adopt a more mature alternative." At 41 stars, 0 dependents, and a single 2025-04-04 release, vendoring/forking is the defensible PM decision; taking a hard Composer dependency on it is not.
  • Roadmap: enum standardization as an enabling workstream. If the roadmap includes admin-configurable dropdowns, API contracts with stable enum values, or i18n of labels, this package removes boilerplate from that work. It is a small accelerator, not a milestone.
  • Use cases it unblocks cheaply: generating <select> options for forms, whitelisting values in request validation, serializing enum cases to API payloads, mapping machine values to human labels, and seeding test data with random cases.
  • Decisions it explicitly should not drive: state-machine transition enforcement, audit trails for status changes, or admin-editable value sets. Those are architecture decisions (Spatie model-states, DB-backed lookup tables) that a helper trait cannot satisfy.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The stack is PHP 8.1+ and Laravel 10/11+, and the team already uses native backed enums.
  • You need small ergonomics — options(), toArray(), values(), label maps — repeated across many enum classes.
  • The usage is internal tooling, admin panels, or validation whitelists: low blast radius if the package is abandoned.
  • You are willing to vendor the trait into your codebase under MIT and own it, rather than rely on upstream maintenance.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need transition rules, guards, or state-machine semantics — use spatie/laravel-model-states or a dedicated FSM library.
  • You need admin-editable enum values — enums are code; use a lookup table with a cached repository.
  • You need maintenance guarantees, security response, or enterprise support. 41 stars, 0 dependents, one maintainer, and a single release are weak continuity signals; a supply-chain review will flag this.
  • A more established alternative already fits — archtechx/enums covers a very similar trait-based surface with far more adoption; BenSampo/laravel-enum covers the pre-8.1 generation; Laravel itself ships an Enum validation rule now.
  • Labels require heavy localization, pluralization, or per-tenant overrides — that belongs in translation files or a label resolver, not a trait.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): This is a small, MIT-licensed utility that trims repetitive code around PHP enums — the mechanism we use to keep statuses, roles, and tiers consistent across the product. Cost is effectively zero and it is not a strategic dependency; the recommendation is to pilot it in one module or simply copy the trait into our codebase rather than adopt it as a platform component. The downside risk of the package's low adoption (41 stars, no dependents, single maintainer) is neutralized by the permissive license and the fact that we can own the ~40 lines ourselves. No budget, no procurement, no roadmap impact.

To engineering: Drop-in trait for enum classes; adds options/values/label helpers and reduces duplicated array_column(self::cases(), 'value') code across the codebase. PHP 8.1+ required. Recommend a one-sprint spike: vendor the trait under App\Support\Concerns, add our own unit tests, and compare against archtechx/enums before committing. Do not put it on a critical path without a fork we control. Success criteria: fewer than X duplicated enum helper methods remaining after adoption, and zero production incidents attributable to the trait.
