Laravelrepositories Laravel Package

aubinlrx/laravelrepositories

Repository pattern helpers for Laravel: wrap Eloquent models behind clean interfaces so data access is easier to organize, swap, and test. A lightweight package for structuring queries, keeping controllers slim in larger apps, and defining explicit contracts between application layers.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Architecture: whether to introduce a repository abstraction between business logic and Eloquent. This package is a concrete implementation of the repository pattern for Laravel 5 (contracts + Eloquent-backed base repository). The real decision it informs is whether our domain layer should depend on Eloquent directly or on interfaces we control — a choice that affects testing strategy, future database swaps, and how much of our codebase is coupled to the framework.
  • Testability and CI strategy. Repository interfaces enable swapping the Eloquent implementation for in-memory fakes in unit tests. If test speed and isolation are recurring pain points, this pattern is one lever — but the package itself is not the only (or best) way to get there.
  • Build vs. buy vs. internalize. With 12 stars, a single release in May 2015, and a low health score, this should be evaluated as a reference implementation rather than a dependency. A thin in-house repository layer (~100–200 lines of contracts and a base class) delivers the same architectural benefit with none of the abandonment risk.
  • Use cases where the pattern pays off: multi-datasource or legacy-DB coexistence, teams standardizing on clean/hexagonal architecture, and codebases where controllers and models are heavily entangled and need a seam for refactoring.
  • Roadmap implication: do not put this on a dependency roadmap for any active or new product. If the pattern is desired, schedule a small internal spike to define our own contracts; treat the package's API shape as prior art.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it only when:

  • You are maintaining a legacy Laravel 5.x application pinned to that era's PHP and framework conventions, and the team already uses this pattern.
  • You need a quick reference for the contract/base-repository shape before writing your own — read the source, don't install it.
  • You are doing a short-lived internal prototype where dependency longevity is irrelevant.

Look elsewhere when (the default case):

  • You are on Laravel 8/9/10/11+ or PHP 8+. A 2015 package targeting Laravel 5 will likely conflict with modern framework and PHP versions, and there is no maintainer activity to fix it.
  • You require active maintenance, security response, or vendor support. No releases since 2015 and a negligible community mean no CVE triage and no upstream fixes — an unacceptable supply-chain risk for production.
  • You need ecosystem trust signals (adoption, docs, issue responsiveness). Twelve stars provides effectively none.
  • Your goal is simply testable, decoupled data access — implement the contracts yourself, or lean on Laravel's container bindings and existing first-party/community patterns (e.g., action/service classes, Doctrine if you genuinely need persistence abstraction). The pattern is small enough that a dependency adds risk without adding much value.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This package addresses a legitimate architectural concern — decoupling business logic from the database layer to improve testability and flexibility — but it is a 2015-era, single-release, low-adoption library with no maintainer activity. Adopting it as a dependency would introduce maintenance and security risk for marginal benefit. Recommendation: do not adopt; if the architecture is valuable to us, fund a small internal implementation (days, not weeks) that we own and can maintain. Net: low cost to pursue the pattern, near-zero cost to decline the package.

To engineering: It's a clean, small implementation of the repository pattern for Laravel 5 with Eloquent, MIT-licensed. It's a useful design reference for contract and base-class structure, but it's unmaintained since 2015, incompatible with modern Laravel/PHP without work, and has no community behind it. Proposal: use it as prior art, write our own thin contracts and Eloquent base repository, bind them in the service container, and get the same testability and decoupling benefits with code we control.
