Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy vs. integrate: gives the team a third option — adopt a Laravel-native package instead of building a custom module or standing up a third-party SaaS integration. Frame the decision in engineer-weeks saved versus the cost of owning a pre-1.0 dependency.
  • Roadmap sequencing: at v0.1.0 the package signals evaluation, not commitment. Use it to de-risk a discovery spike this cycle and defer a build decision until a v1.0 tag or a stable API surface is announced. Do not put it on a committed, externally-facing release train yet.
  • Feature scope negotiation: a package that handles the plumbing lets the team re-scope a feature from "infrastructure work" to "product surface," which is the framing that unlocks design and QA time in planning.
  • Cost and maintenance modeling: a Composer-installed dependency is an ongoing liability (upgrade cadence, security advisories, Laravel major-version bumps). Model it as such in the maintenance budget rather than treating adoption as a one-time cost.
  • Standardization across products: if multiple Laravel services need the same capability, a shared package beats duplicated internal code — a concrete consolidation win to weigh against the coordination cost.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt for evaluation when:

  • The stack is genuinely Laravel/PHP and the capability maps to an existing, named gap in the product plan — not a capability we'd have to invent a use case for.
  • We can pin the version in composer.json, isolate usage behind our own interface/adapter, and swap or remove it without a rewrite.
  • The maintainer has a visible release and issue cadence and the package is covered by our dependency-scanning process.

Look elsewhere when:

  • A first-party or framework-native solution already covers the need — the switching cost of a package is rarely repaid by novelty.
  • The capability is core to our differentiation. Anything on the critical path of the product's value proposition should be owned, not delegated to a v0.1.x dependency.
  • There is no stable API, no changelog discipline, or a single unresponsive maintainer — v0.1.0 is by definition an unstable API where breaking changes are expected and permitted.
  • The licensing, security posture, or Laravel/PHP version support hasn't been reviewed by engineering.

Non-negotiable gate before any production use: a spike with a timeboxed spike report, a pinned version, dependency scanning in CI, and an explicit exit plan.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives: This is an early-stage, pre-1.0 Laravel package that may let us deliver a planned capability with less engineering effort than building it ourselves. We are recommending a timeboxed evaluation, not adoption — it is not on a committed roadmap and carries the stability risk inherent to a v0.1.0 release. Decision requested: approve a short spike, with a build-or-buy recommendation to follow.

For engineering: Treat v0.1.0 as an interface-in-progress. If we spike this, wrap it behind our own abstraction, pin the version, and add it to dependency scanning. Report back on API stability, upgrade friction, and what we'd have to build ourselves anyway — that last number is what actually decides this.
