Getting Started

0.1.0 is the first tagged release, so there is no upgrade path, deprecation surface, or migration guide to account for yet. Treat this assessment as a baseline and revisit it at the first minor bump (0.2.0), since pre-1.0 minors are where breaking changes usually land.

Minimal adoption steps:

  1. composer require vendor/package:^0.1 — verify the constraint resolves and check the tag on Packagist before pulling it into anything shared.
  2. Confirm Laravel auto-discovery by reading the package's composer.json for extra.laravel.providers and extra.laravel.aliases. If absent, register the provider manually in bootstrap/providers.php (Laravel 11+) or config/app.php.
  3. Publish anything the package ships: php artisan vendor:publish --provider="Vendor\Package\PackageServiceProvider" (add --tag= once you know the tags).
  4. Run php artisan config:clear && composer dump-autoload and verify the provider appears under php artisan about.

Where to look first, in order: the README's usage example, the service provider's register()/boot() methods (they define the real public surface), the published config file (defaults and env var names), then the tests/ directory to gauge coverage.

First use case: pick the smallest possible invocation from the README — a single facade call, helper, or artisan command — and exercise it in php artisan tinker or a throwaway feature test before wiring it into application code. At 0.1.0 you are validating that the package works in your Laravel version, not just that it installs.

Implementation Patterns

Contain the 0.x risk behind an adapter. Wrap the package's facade/API in your own thin service or repository class and inject that. When 0.2.0 renames a method, you change one file instead of grepping the codebase. This is the single highest-value pattern for a first-release dependency.

Pin narrowly. With semver, ^0.1 means >=0.1.0 <0.2.0, so it already blocks minor bumps — good. Avoid * or dev-main in anything that ships. For production, consider committing composer.lock and using composer install --no-dev in deploy.

Feature-flag the integration. Gate calls behind a config value (config('services.package.enabled')) so you can disable the package in production without a redeploy of application code if the first release misbehaves.

Test against your Laravel matrix. If you maintain multiple Laravel versions, add a CI job per version. Pre-1.0 packages are frequently tested against a single framework version. For package-level tests use orchestra/testbench; for in-app verification a plain feature test hitting the facade is enough.

Register bindings, don't reach into the container. If the package exposes an interface, bind your preferred implementation in a dedicated service provider (PackageServiceProvider in your own app/Providers) rather than resolving concrete classes inline.

Config first, code second. Read every published config key before writing integration code — the package's defaults may already cover your case, and the config file usually documents env var names and toggle behaviour better than the README.

Gotchas and Tips

  • Pre-1.0 semver is not a stability promise. Patch releases should be safe; minors can break. Read the diff between tags (git log --oneline 0.1.0..0.2.0) before bumping, since an upgrade guide may not exist for a while.
  • Discovery cache staleness. After composer require, run php artisan package:discover if the provider doesn't appear. In deployments, run config:cache and route:cache after the package is installed and any config published.
  • vendor:publish overwrites silently with --force. Never use --force in a deploy script; publish once, commit the config, and edit deliberately.
  • env() outside config files returns null under config:cache. If you're overriding package behaviour, do it in config/*.php, not at the call site.
  • Provider boot order matters. If the package registers routes, migrations, or view namespaces, conflicts with your own app surface as "route not defined" or duplicate migration class names. Check php artisan route:list and php artisan migrate:status after install.
  • Debugging: php artisan about for provider/config state, php artisan config:show <package> for resolved config, Telescope or Log::debug() around the first invocation, and php artisan vendor:publish --list style discovery for available tags.
  • Extension points to inspect early: container bindings in register(), macros registered in boot(), dispatched events, and any Manager-style driver pattern. These are the seams you'll use to customise behaviour without forking.
  • Expect thin coverage at 0.1.0. If the package does anything load-bearing, write your own integration test proving the behaviour you depend on — it doubles as a regression check when you upgrade.
  • Report upstream early. First releases benefit disproportionately from issue reports; a quick repro in the package's issue tracker is cheaper than a local workaround you'll carry forever.
