Filament Sentinel Laravel Package

anselmokossa/filament-sentinel

Drop-in branded error pages for Filament 500, 403, 404, 419 and 503, built from native Filament UI so they inherit your panel's colours and dark mode. Real exception details, stable SAP-style message numbers, request ids and EN/PT/PT-BR translations.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Closing the "last mile" of branded admin UX. Teams that have invested in a Filament panel (custom palette, logo, dark mode, typography) currently ship Laravel's stock error pages the moment something goes wrong — a visible seam in an otherwise branded product. This package removes that seam for five high-traffic error states (500, 403, 404, 419, 503).
  • Support-ticket deflection and faster incident triage. Because content is derived from the real exception (exception class, location, message on 500; the missing path on 404; Retry-After on 503; authorization detail on 403), internal users and ops staff can self-diagnose or paste a precise error into a ticket rather than "it broke." That is a measurable reduction in back-and-forth, especially for internal/admin tools where the audience is trusted.
  • Build-vs-buy: buy (or fork), don't build. The scope is narrow and well-defined — five error views composed from native Filament components. In-house this is 2–5 days of design + implementation + i18n + dark-mode QA, plus permanent maintenance as Filament's component API evolves. Adoption is a near-zero-effort decision by comparison.
  • Localization roadmap unblocked. Built-in i18n means error pages in a multi-locale admin don't require a separate translation workstream — relevant if internationalization is on the roadmap for the panel.
  • Maintenance-burden signal for dependency policy. With 9 stars, 0 dependents, a single maintainer, and readme/changelog-only maturity, this is a tactical polish dependency, not a strategic platform bet. It should inform (not decide) how strictly you gate third-party packages: the small surface area makes it cheap to vendor or fork if it goes stale.
  • Not a decision this supports: security posture, observability/APM strategy, or public-facing marketing-site error handling. It is a Filament-panel-scoped presentational layer; it does not replace logging, alerting, or a real incident-response process.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when all of the following hold:

  • You run a Filament v5 panel on Laravel 12 / PHP 8.2+. The version pins are hard constraints — do not assume backward compatibility with Filament v3/v4 panels.
  • The panel is branded and visible to people who matter — internal staff, ops, clients in a white-labeled admin — so visual inconsistency on error pages carries real credibility cost.
  • Your error-page audience is trusted (internal/admin). The 500 page exposes exception class, location, and message behind a "View more" panel; that is a diagnostic feature for staff and a information-disclosure risk for anonymous public users. Confirm you can gate or disable that panel before enabling on any public-facing surface.
  • Your team has no design-system capacity to maintain bespoke error views, and no strong opinion about owning them.

Look elsewhere (or build in-house) when:

  • Version mismatch. Filament v3/v4 or Laravel 10/11 — this package will not fit, and there is no evidence of a backport path.
  • Public-facing app. The diagnostic 500 panel plus a 9-star, single-maintainer dependency is the wrong trade for a surface where leaked stack detail is a security finding.
  • Strict supply-chain governance. 0 dependents, low star count, and readme/changelog-only maturity mean no independent validation. Either accept the risk because the blast radius is tiny (presentational views), or fork it under MIT.
  • You need SLA-backed support. There is no commercial backing here; treat it as community code.
  • You need error pages outside the Filament panel (marketing site, API JSON errors, queued-job failures) — scope is panel views only.

Mitigation if adopting: pin the version, keep the package behind a thin internal wrapper or fork, and add a smoke test asserting each error code renders and that the 500 detail panel is disabled in production/public contexts.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds): Our admin panel looks polished everywhere except the moments that matter most — when something goes wrong. This is a small, free (MIT) package that makes our 500/403/404/419/503 pages automatically match our panel's branding, dark mode, and language, and turns cryptic errors into specific, actionable messages for our staff. Cost: hours, not days. Risk: low, because it only styles error pages and we can fork it if the maintainer walks away. It is polish, not strategy — I would not put it on a roadmap slide, but I would ship it.

For engineering (the real conversation):

  • Effort: ~half a day including review, staging verification, and a regression test that each of the five codes renders with the panel's brand and in each supported locale.
  • What it replaces: our stock Laravel error views and any bespoke overrides; it composes native <x-filament::button>, badge, section, and icon, so there is no new design system to learn or maintain.
  • Known constraints: Filament v5, Laravel 12, PHP 8.2+ only. Single maintainer, 9 stars, 0 dependents, readme/changelog maturity — so pin the version and be prepared to vendor the views. The code surface is small, which is exactly why forking is a realistic exit.
  • Security caveat that must be settled before merge: the 500 page surfaces the real exception class/location/message via a "View more" panel. That is desirable for authenticated staff and unacceptable for anonymous users. Gate it by environment/role (or disable it) and document the decision.
  • Definition of done: error pages render branded and localized; the 500 detail panel is verified off in production-anonymous contexts; a pinned constraint exists in composer.json; the fork path is noted in the ADR.
