Laravel Categories Laravel Package

angkor/laravel-categories

A Laravel package for managing hierarchical categories and attaching them to Eloquent models. It offers nested category trees, polymorphic relationships, ordering, and helpers for querying or organizing categorized content, with migrations and configuration included out of the box.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Taxonomy as a product object vs. hardcoded enums. Forces the question early: are categories a config value, a CMS field, or a first-class entity with hierarchy, localization, and lifecycle? The package only makes sense if you answer "first-class."
  • One taxonomy or many. The polymorphic categorizable pivot lets products, articles, docs, and media share a single category tree (or separate trees via type scoping). This is the decision that most affects IA, search relevance, and admin UX later.
  • Navigation and discovery surface area. Nested Sets (lft/rgt) make ancestor/descendant queries cheap, which directly enables breadcrumbs, category landing pages, "browse by parent," and subtree-scoped filtering. If those are on the roadmap, this is a supporting argument; if not, the complexity isn't earned.
  • URL and SEO strategy. Sluggable gives you human-readable category paths. The PM decision it surfaces is slug stability — renames must 301, not 404 — which this package does not solve for you.
  • Localization sequencing. Translatable support means per-locale category labels without schema churn. This supports a "launch in one market, add locales without re-platforming" roadmap, but only if the team commits to a translation workflow (who translates category names, and when relative to content).
  • Build vs. buy for commodity plumbing. Category CRUD, tree traversal, and slugging are not differentiating. Buying them buys weeks of engineering for a small surface. The decision is where to spend saved time — search, merchandising rules, admin tooling — not whether the package is elegant.
  • Reporting and merchandising consistency. Stable category IDs and a single tree give analytics, attribution, and campaign targeting a shared dimension. This is often the strongest internal justification, and it's a data-model decision, not a UI one.
  • Migration timing. Adopting taxonomy before content volume is high is far cheaper than retrofitting. The package's tree columns are easy to add to an empty-ish schema and painful to backfill under load.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You're on Laravel, already Eloquent-native, and need polymorphic many-to-many categorization across two or more models.
  • The category tree is read-heavy and low-churn — merchandisers reorganize quarterly, not hourly. Nested Sets are excellent here and pathological under frequent sibling reordering or moves (each move rewrites lft/rgt across subtrees).
  • Tree depth and node count are modest (roughly hundreds to low thousands of nodes). Beyond that, rebuild operations and index size become operational line items.
  • You need multi-language labels and slug generation as table stakes, not custom logic.
  • You can vendor/pin the fork and accept owning upgrades.

Look elsewhere when:

  • The fork itself is the risk. Zero stars and zero dependents means no community, no issue triage, no security patch path. Treat angkor/laravel-categories as a code snapshot, not a dependency. Evaluate upstream rinvex/laravel-categories first, and if that's stale, use kalnoy/nestedset directly plus your own thin categorization layer — the category package is mostly glue over it.
  • Categories are user-generated or high-churn (tags, marketplace seller categories, folksonomies). Closure tables or plain adjacency lists with caching fit better.
  • You need faceted search at scale. Taxonomy should be the source of truth, but querying belongs in Meilisearch/Algolia/Elastic; don't let nested-set queries become your search layer.
  • You need multi-tenant trees — per-seller, per-brand, or per-region hierarchies where tenants edit independently. Nested Sets per tenant is workable but the package gives you no tenancy model.
  • You need admin UI, approvals, merge/split of categories, redirects on rename, or audit history. This is a data layer only; budget for that product surface separately.
  • Laravel/PHP version support is unclear. rinvex-family packages have historically lagged major framework releases; verify composer.json constraints before it becomes a platform upgrade blocker.
  • You're polyglot or the taxonomy must be shared with non-PHP services. A categories table with a documented contract beats a package-owned schema.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives (one paragraph): Category structure is a quiet but real lever on discovery, SEO, and merchandising — it determines how users browse, how landing pages rank, and whether reporting has a consistent dimension. This package would let us stand up polymorphic, hierarchical, multilingual categories in days instead of weeks. The caveat is that the specific fork has no adoption and no maintenance community, so I'd frame it as buying a reference implementation, not a vendor: a short technical spike, pin the code, and confirm we're comfortable owning it — or fall back to the upstream library or a thin in-house layer. Either way, the decision I need is to fund the taxonomy model now, before content volume makes it expensive.

To engineering (bullets):

  • Polymorphic categorizable pivot, Nested Sets for ancestor/descendant queries, Sluggable, Translatable — all standard, low-surprise components.
  • The real cost is operational: tree moves rewrite subtrees, slug renames need redirect handling we build, translations need a workflow we define.
  • Recommend a 1–2 day spike: install, model a realistic tree, benchmark a reorder and a subtree query at ~1–2k nodes, check framework version constraints, review last commit date.
  • Decide explicitly: fork-and-pin, contribute upstream, or implement a minimal categories table + kalnoy/nestedset ourselves. All three are defensible; drifting without choosing is not.

Decision request: Approve the spike and a written build-vs-buy call before the next content-modeling milestone, so taxonomy doesn't get hardcoded into an admin screen we then have to unwind.
