Jpgraph Laravel Package

amenadiel/jpgraph

A Laravel wrapper for JpGraph, the popular PHP charting library. Generate bar, line, and pie charts server-side with a simple API, embedding image charts in Blade views without JavaScript. Bundles JpGraph and adds config and facades for building dynamic charts quickly in Laravel.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Server-side chart rendering for Laravel/PHP applications that need chart images without JavaScript, headless browsers, or external rendering services.
  • PDF and email report generation: charts rendered as PNG/JPEG embed cleanly into mPDF, TCPDF, and DOMPDF pipelines — a common blocker for JS-based chart libraries.
  • Build vs. buy: offers a Composer-installable alternative to either maintaining an in-house GD-based chart renderer or porting legacy JpGraph v3.5 codebases.
  • Roadmap features requiring static visual output: scheduled reports, invoice/statement generation, dashboard thumbnails, and email chart summaries — all asynchronous contexts where a frontend chart library is impractical.
  • Legacy modernization: a path for teams with pre-Composer JpGraph v3.5 installs to move to a maintained, namespaced dependency.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • The product must generate chart images in a backend-only context (cron, queue workers, PDF export, transactional email).
  • You already rely on GD (or can enable it) and want to avoid adding a Node/headless-browser rendering dependency.
  • You are migrating a legacy JpGraph v3.5 codebase and need namespacing and Composer autoloading with minimal rewrite.
  • Chart variety (bar, pie, line, radar, stock, Gantt) matters more than interactivity.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need interactive, client-side charts — Chart.js, ApexCharts, or ECharts are the right tool.
  • License clarity is a procurement requirement. The NOASSERTION license is a red flag; JpGraph's historical licensing is restrictive for some commercial use. Get legal sign-off before committing.
  • Active maintenance is expected. The last release was April 2021 (roughly three-plus years of no tagged activity at time of writing). Audit PHP 8.2+/8.3 compatibility and GD behavior before adopting.
  • A smaller dependency footprint or a first-class Laravel-native charting wrapper with active maintainers is preferred.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This package enables our application to generate chart images directly on the server — the foundation for report exports, emailed statements, and PDF deliverables that customers currently receive without visuals or with manual workarounds. It removes a dependency on frontend rendering infrastructure for those workflows, reducing infrastructure complexity and cost for asynchronous jobs.

To engineering: It is a Composer-managed refactor of JpGraph v3.5, providing namespaced access to a mature GD-based charting engine. Integration cost is low for teams already comfortable with PHP image generation, and it fits naturally into queue and export pipelines. Two caveats must be owned before we commit: the license field is NOASSERTION, which requires a legal review before commercial distribution, and the last tagged release is 2021, so we should budget for a compatibility audit (PHP 8.x, GD) and pin the version.

Recommendation: Treat as a conditional adoption. Run a time-boxed spike (1–2 days) that (a) validates PHP version and GD compatibility in our target environment, (b) confirms license terms with legal, and (c) produces one representative chart for a real PDF/email deliverable. Escalate to full adoption only if all three pass; otherwise evaluate a maintained alternative or a thin in-house GD wrapper.
