Eloquent Word Laravel Package

ambengers/eloquent-word

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Feature scoping for document output: ambengers/eloquent-word lets a Laravel app render Eloquent models (or collections) into .docx files, so "export record to Word" features — contracts, letters, statements, customer-facing reports, internal record exports — can be scoped as a thin model/template layer rather than a document-generation project.
  • Build vs. buy: the package is a convenience wrapper around PHPWord. The real "buy" decision is the wrapper and Laravel integration glue (templates, model binding, download/stream responses); the underlying rendering engine is a mature open-source library, which keeps lock-in low and exit costs small.
  • Roadmap sequencing — framework upgrade: release 5.0 is primarily a Laravel 10 compatibility release and arrives as a major version bump, which in this package's history typically means older Laravel branches are dropped. Treat 5.0 as a dependency-upgrade ticket that must be sequenced with (not after) the app's Laravel 10 migration.
  • Word vs. PDF decision: this package is the right call when downstream recipients must edit the document (legal redlines, mail-merge follow-ups, customer-filled forms). If the requirement is fixed-layout, print-perfect output, that's a PDF toolchain decision, not this one.
  • Delivery/ops decisions: document generation is synchronous CPU + memory work. Plan for queued generation and storage (S3/local) plus signed download URLs for anything beyond small, on-demand single-record exports.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when most of the following hold:

  • The application is on Laravel 10 (or is being upgraded to it) — 5.0 is the version that supports it; pinning to 5.0 while still on Laravel 8/9 is likely to conflict on framework constraints, so verify composer.json requirements before committing.
  • The team already knows Blade/PHPWord-style templating and the documents are structurally simple: header/footer, looping tables of line items, a handful of placeholders.
  • The data lives in Eloquent models and maps cleanly to the document; you want the export to live next to the model rather than in a separate service.
  • Volume is modest to moderate and can be queued — not thousands of documents per minute.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need pixel-perfect, print-grade PDFs (dompdf/wkhtmltopdf/Browsershot or a hosted rendering API), or true Office automation (Excel formulas, pivot tables, macros) — different tool class.
  • You need advanced .docx templating (content controls, conditional sections authored by non-developers in Word). Going directly to PHPWord or a commercial doc-generation SaaS gives more control than a thin wrapper.
  • Maintenance risk is unacceptable: this is a small, low-cadence package (this release is a single Laravel 10 support PR). For a business-critical document pipeline, budget for the ability to fork or vendor it — which is cheap here because the surface area is small — or choose something with a support contract.
  • Breaking-change tolerance is low for a currently-stable feature area; a major bump with a narrow changelog means you own the regression testing.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (one paragraph): We can ship Word-document export from our existing record data with a small, low-cost open-source Laravel package instead of building a document pipeline. The new 5.0 release adds Laravel 10 support, which is the gate for our framework upgrade — but it is a major version, so it drops support for older Laravel versions and must land together with that upgrade, not before it. Main risk is dependency maintenance (single-maintainer project, infrequent releases); mitigation is low switching cost and a small integration surface. Recommendation: adopt for straightforward templated Word exports, keep PDF/print-perfect and high-volume needs on a separate track.

For engineering (bullets):

  • 5.0 = Laravel 10 support (PR #11). Major version bump — assume Laravel 8/9 support is dropped; diff composer.json constraints for laravel/framework and phpoffice/phpword before upgrading.
  • Upgrade path: bump the constraint, run the existing document test suite, and smoke-test template rendering (placeholders, loops/tables, images, headers/footers) since PHPWord version drift is the likeliest silent breakage.
  • Keep the integration thin and behind an interface/service so we can swap to PHPWord directly or fork if the package stalls.
  • Do generation in a queued job with storage + signed URLs; watch memory on large collections.
  • Add a regression fixture test per document template — that's our real safety net against future major bumps.
