Testbench Laravel Package

alt-three/testbench

A lightweight testing harness for Laravel packages, providing a bootstrapped application instance with service providers, configuration, and helpers so you can write fast, reliable package tests without a full application skeleton.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for testing infrastructure: TestBench is a thin collection of Laravel testing traits (the kind of helpers that wrap database transactions, mock application services, or assert JSON responses). Its existence—and its fate—is a data point for whether to vendor small testing helpers or rely on framework-native primitives (RefreshDatabase, withoutMiddleware, assertJson, etc.). Decision: keep testing helpers inside our own codebase or in the framework, not in an external micro-dependency.
  • Dependency-risk triage: With 6 stars, 0 dependents, an archived repo, and a last release in August 2020, this is a textbook "abandoned micro-package." It belongs in the do not adopt bucket and is useful as a reference case when we review our own dependency tree for single-maintainer, low-adoption packages.
  • Roadmap signal for internal developer tooling: If our teams are hand-rolling the same testing traits across services, the right move is an internal shared testing package (or a Laravel preset) rather than resurrecting a dead OSS one. TestBench shows the demand exists but not that this is the vehicle.
  • Use cases it does NOT support: It is not a test runner, not a testing framework, and not a replacement for Laravel's built-in testing utilities. Do not scope it into QA or CI strategy.

When to Consider This Package

Consider referencing it only when:

  • You are auditing legacy Laravel codebases (circa Laravel 5.x) and need to identify where AltThree\TestBench traits are used before a framework upgrade.
  • You are designing an internal testing-helpers library and want prior art for which traits teams actually want.

Look elsewhere in essentially every other scenario:

  • Laravel's own testing toolkit now covers the same ground (database traits, HTTP assertion helpers, middleware bypass, mocking).
  • Pest, PHPUnit, and Laravel Dusk are the supported paths for new work.
  • The package is archived, has no maintainers, no dependents, no releases since 2020, and carries no compatibility guarantees with current Laravel versions. Adopting it means owning a fork.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a tiny, archived, single-maintainer testing helper with negligible adoption. We are not adopting it. Its value to us is as a cautionary example: testing utilities are commodity infrastructure that should live in the framework or in our own shared library, not in an unmaintained third-party package. The recommended action is zero spend and zero integration; treat it as input to our dependency-risk policy.

To engineering: Don't add this as a dependency. If your service needs testing traits it once provided (database isolation, service mocking, JSON assertions), use Laravel's built-in features or copy the trait into an internal package where we control maintenance. Flag any existing usage during framework upgrades so it doesn't become a silent upgrade blocker. Net decision: reject as a dependency, retain as prior art.
