Filament Export Laravel Package

alperenersoy/filament-export

Filament Export lets you add Excel and CSV export buttons to Filament resources and tables. Customize columns, formatting, and file names, and filter which records are exported, so admins can download data straight from the panel.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Build vs. buy for admin/back-office tooling. Export-to-CSV/Excel and print views are recurring, low-differentiation requests from ops, finance, and support. This package converts a recurring 1–3 day custom build per resource into a configuration task, letting you reserve engineering capacity for differentiated work.
  • Roadmap sequencing of internal tooling. If your admin panel runs on Filament, this is a candidate for "table-stakes parity" work that can be scheduled as a small, low-risk increment rather than a themed epic. It shortens the path from "we have an admin panel" to "ops can self-serve their data."
  • Feature scoping for data egress. Forces an explicit decision on which resources are exportable, in which formats (CSV vs. XLSX vs. print), and with which column sets — a scoping conversation that is cheaper to have up front than to retrofit after users start asking.
  • Compliance and data-portability responses. Customer and internal requests for "give me my data" or "give me this month's numbers" can often be satisfied by a configured export rather than a bespoke API or a data-team ticket. Useful input to whether you need a formal reporting product at all.
  • Deferring the analytics/reporting buy decision. A working export path buys time and evidence: what people actually export, how often, and at what volume is the requirement input for any future BI tool (Metabase, Looker, a warehouse) rather than guesswork.
  • Vendor/plugin risk calibration. A narrow, single-purpose plugin with a small blast radius is a different procurement decision than a framework-level dependency. This belongs in the "low-commitment, reversible" bucket — worth piloting, not worth an architecture review board.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • The product runs on Filament (v3/v4) and the admin panel is already a real surface your internal users depend on. Outside Filament, this package has no value — it is a UI-layer plugin, not an export engine.
  • The need is human-initiated, interactive export: a user clicks a button on a table and gets a file, or prints a clean view. That is precisely the scope it covers.
  • Data volumes are modest — thousands, not millions, of rows — and exports can run synchronously in a web request. Anything that needs to survive a timeout is a different problem.
  • You want column-level customization and print layouts without writing Blade templates and spreadsheet writers from scratch.
  • You can accept a single-maintainer, community plugin (275 stars, no downstream package dependents) and are willing to pin the version, read the source, and fork if necessary. The code surface is small enough that this is a reasonable trade.
  • You need a fast pilot to validate demand before committing to a reporting roadmap.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need queued, chunked, or very large exports, scheduled/recurring exports, or exports delivered by email — that is maatwebsite/excel plus a job and storage layer, or a proper reporting service.
  • You need PDF templating, branding, multi-page invoices, or pixel-accurate print output — this is a table-export plugin, not a document-generation tool.
  • Governance requirements are strict: per-field authorization on exported columns, PII masking, immutable audit logs of who exported what, retention policy, or a security review with an SLA behind it. A community plugin will not carry that on its own; you would be building the controls around it regardless.
  • The admin panel is not Filament, or the export need is really an API/integration need rather than a human-in-the-loop one.
  • Ecosystem maturity is a hard requirement — if your policy is "no dependencies with a bus factor of one," this fails regardless of quality.
  • The real requirement is analytics (trends, joins, dashboards), not extraction. Exporting spreadsheets to recreate analysis in Excel is a smell; solve it with a BI layer.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: Export and print are the most common asks we get on internal tools and the least strategically interesting to build. This plugin lets us deliver them as configuration instead of custom code, which means faster turnaround on ops and finance requests and less engineering time spent on functionality that isn't a differentiator. The commitment is small and reversible: it's a UI-layer plugin on top of a framework we already run, isolated to the admin panel, and we can remove it without touching product code. Recommended action is a time-boxed pilot on two or three high-demand resources to measure usage before deciding whether a real reporting investment is warranted.

To engineering: It's a Filament plugin that adds configurable export (CSV/XLSX) and print actions to tables and resources. It removes boilerplate — column selection, formatting, print views — but it does not solve scale: no queued or chunked exports, no scheduled delivery, no PDF document generation, and no field-level authorization or audit trail. Treat it as a UI convenience layer. Pin the version, review the source (it's small), and plan to own a fork if the maintainer goes quiet — the maintenance cost is low but non-zero. If we later need large or automated exports, we replace the execution path with a job-backed maatwebsite/excel implementation and keep the UX.
