Ping Laravel Package

acamposm/ping

A simple Laravel package for pinging hosts and checking connectivity. It wraps ping commands behind a clean API, making it easy to test server availability, measure response, and integrate uptime checks into your Laravel apps.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Uptime and reachability monitoring: This package gives your Laravel app a native way to test whether a host or gateway responds to ICMP ECHO_REQUEST. That directly supports product decisions around health checks, status pages, SLA reporting, and "is the thing we depend on actually alive?" dashboards.
  • Network diagnostics inside the admin surface: If your product needs a "test connection" button for customer-configured endpoints (VPN gateways, on-prem agents, edge devices, IoT fleets), this is a ready-made backend primitive rather than building raw exec() handling yourself.
  • Build vs buy for network tooling: At 57 stars, one maintainer, and no dependents, this is not a strategic dependency — it's a convenience wrapper. The real decision is write a 40-line wrapper in-house vs take a small MIT package. Neither is a platform bet.
  • Roadmap signal — not a differentiator: Ping-based features are table stakes in monitoring/ops products. Adopt only where latency-to-first-check or a simple liveness probe matters; do not put it on a roadmap as a headline capability.
  • Use cases it fits: scheduled health checks via Laravel's scheduler, pre-flight checks before provisioning, connectivity validation in setup wizards, and multi-region probe result aggregation.
  • Use cases it does not fit: latency benchmarking (ICMP timing is coarse and platform-dependent), packet-loss SLAs, or anything customer-facing that implies precision. For real observability, the decision is to buy/use a dedicated agent or a hosted probe network.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You're on Laravel/PHP and need a lightweight ICMP liveness check with an idiomatic facade/API instead of shelling out yourself.
  • Your target hosts are ones you control or already permission-scoped, and you accept the operational reality that ICMP requires elevated privileges or CAP_NET_RAW in containers.
  • The check is internal — an admin panel, a scheduler job, a queue worker — where a false positive/negative is recoverable and not customer-visible.
  • You're prototyping and want to defer the "how do we get ping results into PHP safely" question.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Maintenance risk matters. Last release was December 2021, zero dependents, and a low adoption signal. No recent commits means no guarantees against newer PHP versions, no security patch pathway, and no vendor you can escalate to. Treat this as "vendor at your own risk."
  • You need TCP/HTTP/UDP checks. Many networks block ICMP outright. An HTTP/TCP probe (Laravel HTTP client, or a dedicated monitoring service) is more representative of real availability for web services and far more portable across cloud environments.
  • You need precision or history. ICMP round-trip times from a shared PHP process are noisy and scheduler-dependent. If the product promise involves latency SLOs, use a purpose-built probe (Prometheus blackbox_exporter, a hosted monitor, or a small dedicated service).
  • Container/security constraints are tight. Running ping with the required capabilities inside FPM is often prohibited by platform teams; the operational cost can exceed the value of the wrapper.
  • You need SLA-backed support or a maintained release cadence. MIT + solo maintainer + stale = no support contract.

Adoption criteria (all should be true): internal-only use, you can pin the version and fork if needed, your infra permits ICMP, and the alternative in-house implementation would take more than a few hours to harden.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

For executives (30 seconds): We can add basic "is it reachable" network checks to the product with a small, free, MIT-licensed PHP package rather than building it. It's a convenience, not a platform bet — the package has modest adoption and hasn't been updated since late 2021, so we should treat it as replaceable and keep our own thin wrapper in front of it. The strategic value isn't the package; it's the health-check capability it unlocks with minimal engineering time.

For engineering (the practical case):

  • Scope: ~half a day to integrate and test, versus a day or two to write, harden, and test process execution, output parsing, and error handling ourselves.
  • Risk is containable: MIT license allows forking; we isolate it behind our own HealthProbe interface so a swap to a native implementation or a hosted monitor is a one-class change.
  • Known constraints to design around: requires ping binary and network capabilities in the runtime image; ICMP may be blocked in some environments (including some cloud networks), so we must have a fallback probe (HTTP/TCP) and never let a blocked ICMP read as "down" in customer-facing status.
  • Maintenance posture: pin the version, add a wrapper test suite, and plan a quarterly "still works on current PHP/Laravel" check. If it breaks, we own the fix — budget for that.
  • Recommendation: green-light for internal/admin and prototype use; do not build a customer-facing SLA or latency commitment on top of ICMP timing from this package. If reachability becomes a headline product feature, revisit with a dedicated probing architecture instead of extending this wrapper.
