Laravel Azure File Storage Driver Laravel Package

academe/laravel-azure-file-storage-driver

A Laravel filesystem driver that connects Azure File Storage to Laravel's Storage facade. Add an Azure disk to your config and read, write, and delete files through the same familiar API you use for local and S3 storage.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Storage backend selection for Azure-hosted Laravel apps. This package makes Azure File shares (SMB/NFS-style shares, not Blob) usable through Laravel's native Storage facade, so "which storage tier do we use?" becomes a config decision instead of a code fork.
  • Build vs. buy. A custom Flysystem adapter for Azure Files is roughly 1–2 engineer-weeks plus indefinite maintenance. Adopting an MIT-licensed adapter is the cheaper path if the maintenance risk is acceptable.
  • Azure Files vs. Azure Blob tradeoff. Files for shared-access/SMB semantics, mounted-share parity, and lift-and-shift of legacy file I/O; Blob for cheap object storage, CDN delivery, and first-party tooling. This package only covers the former.
  • Lift-and-shift / migration decisions. Apps currently relying on network drives, SFTP drops, or Windows file-share conventions can move to Azure without rewriting file handling — a meaningful scope reduction in a migration.
  • Portability and lock-in posture. Keeping I/O behind Laravel's filesystem abstraction means Azure remains a deployment choice, not an architectural commitment.
  • Roadmap input on Azure as a supported target. If Azure is (or may become) a first-class deployment environment, this surfaces the question of whether we adopt, fork, or contribute upstream.
  • Procurement/security diligence. Forces explicit answers on auth model (account key vs. SAS vs. Entra ID/managed identity), data residency, and dependency risk before adoption.

When to Consider This Package

Consider it when:

  • You specifically need Azure File shares — SMB/NFS semantics, mounted-share parity, or existing share infrastructure — rather than object storage.
  • You're already on Azure and want Storage::disk('azure') to behave like any other Laravel disk.
  • You want a fast, MIT-licensed starting point and are comfortable pinning and vendoring a small dependency.
  • Your app is on a Laravel 9/10-era stack with Flysystem v3; verify version compatibility before committing.

Look elsewhere when:

  • You need Azure Blob Storage — use Microsoft's first-party league/flysystem-azure-blob-storage instead.
  • You require managed identity / OAuth (Entra ID) auth rather than account key or SAS — confirm support first; this is often the deciding constraint.
  • You need active maintenance, security patching, or a vendor SLA. Last release was June 2022, ~15 stars, effectively a single-maintainer project. Treat it as unmaintained until proven otherwise.
  • You need Laravel 11/12 support out of the box — expect to fork or patch.
  • You need high throughput, large-object, or CDN-backed delivery — Blob is the better fit.
  • You need first-party vendor support — neither Laravel nor Microsoft ships an official Azure Files driver for Laravel.

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

Executive summary. This is a small, MIT-licensed Laravel plugin that lets our application read and write Azure File shares through the framework's standard storage API. It is only relevant if we commit to Azure Files as a storage tier — it does not cover Blob storage. Where it applies, it replaces an estimated 1–2 engineer-weeks of custom adapter work and preserves portability, since application code stays on Laravel's storage abstraction rather than Azure-specific calls. The tradeoff is dependency risk: roughly 15 GitHub stars, a single maintainer, and no release since mid-2022. Recommendation: approve it for a time-boxed proof of concept behind a specific Azure Files use case; do not standardize on it without a maintenance plan. Pin the version, review the auth model against our security requirements, wrap it behind our own storage interface so it can be swapped or forked, and default to Azure Blob for general object storage.

For engineering. It's a thin Flysystem v3 adapter that registers an azure disk driver — small surface area, straightforward to vendor or fork. The real risks are auth-mode coverage, thin test coverage, and Laravel version drift, not implementation complexity.
