Stateful Eloquent Laravel Package

acacha/stateful-eloquent

Stateful Eloquent adds state handling to Laravel models, letting you define and transition between states with clean, expressive syntax. A lightweight helper for tracking model status without extra dependencies.

Technical Evaluation

Architecture fit

  • Thin trait-based layer bolted onto Eloquent; attaches a state machine to a single model and persists state in a column on that model's table. Fits domain entities with a clear lifecycle (orders, invoices, subscriptions, tickets).
  • Business rules end up in the model layer. If our architecture pushes lifecycle logic into services, command handlers, or a CQRS-style boundary, this creates a split-brain problem — the model becomes a second source of truth for transitions.
  • Appears to assume one state column and no separate transition-log table. That is a structural gap for any workflow needing auditability or compliance evidence.

Integration feasibility

  • Composer-installable, Laravel 5-era service provider plus config file. Integration effort is low in a Laravel 5.x codebase.
  • On Laravel 6+ or modern PHP, auto-discovery, illuminate/* constraints, and PHP version ranges all need verification before we commit. The API surface is small enough that a manual port is plausible if needed.
  • We would inherit full responsibility for test coverage around transitions — the package's own test suite and its coverage of failure paths is unknown.

Technical risk

  • Maintenance risk dominates. 11 stars, low composite score, single maintainer, Laravel 5 framing — treat as effectively unmaintained until proven otherwise.
  • Dependency pinning risk: a package targeting Laravel 5 can lock illuminate/* to old majors and block framework upgrades across the whole application.
  • Concurrency risk is unquantified. Shared-row state machines suffer lost updates under concurrent requests unless transitions are transactional and row-locked. This is the highest-severity technical unknown.
  • No obvious built-in transition history means "who moved this record and when" requires custom instrumentation we build and own.
  • Behavior is encoded in PHP config/trait code, so runtime introspection and support tooling are limited.

Key questions

  • Exactly which Laravel and PHP versions are supported, and is there a maintained fork or successor?
  • Does it expose guards, before/after hooks, and transition events wired into Laravel's event system?
  • Are transitions executed inside a transaction, and is there optimistic locking via a version column or updated_at check?
  • Is there any transition history table or event emission we can leverage for audit?
  • License terms — compatible with our distribution and hosting model?
  • Who owns the fork if we adopt and upstream goes quiet?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Only a fit for an existing Laravel 5.x–6.x application. Not appropriate for greenfield; use a maintained alternative (e.g., spatie/laravel-model-states) or a small in-house state machine instead.
  • Best suited to monolith-style apps where lifecycle logic already lives in Eloquent models and there is no service-layer ambition.

Migration path

  • Add the state column via migration with an explicit default; backfill existing records by mapping current status values to the new state vocabulary.
  • Run legacy and new transition logic in parallel behind a feature flag on one low-risk entity before broadening.
  • Define states in config, not inline in call sites, so the graph can be lifted to a successor library without touching business code.
  • Wrap the package behind an internal interface (e.g., TransitionService) so the vendor dependency is swappable and testable in isolation.

Compatibility

  • Verify PHP range, illuminate/* constraints, and whether the provider relies on pre-5.5 manual registration.
  • Check for trait collisions with soft deletes, activity logging, and existing model observers.
  • Confirm state column type portability (enum vs. string) across our target databases.

Sequencing

  1. Spike: install on a branch, model one low-risk entity, write transition and concurrency tests.
  2. Decision gate: proceed only if framework support and transactional semantics check out — otherwise stop and select an alternative.
  3. Wrap in the internal abstraction and gate with a feature flag.
  4. Roll out to a single workflow with audit logging instrumented by us.
  5. Expand scope or replace based on measured results.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Assume we own the code. Budget for forking or vendoring, and treat every Laravel upgrade as a manual compatibility review with no guaranteed upstream release.

Support

  • No commercial support or SLA; community help is a single maintainer's issue tracker. We must author our own runbook and state-diagram documentation, or the behavior effectively lives only in the source.

Scaling

  • Runtime overhead is negligible — state checks are in-process. The real scaling constraint is database write contention on the state column, not the package.
  • Enforce correctness at the database layer: transitions in a transaction with row locks or an optimistic concurrency check.

Failure modes

  • Invalid transition attempted: behavior may be an exception or a silent no-op depending on implementation — define it and map to API error codes.
  • Race conditions causing double transitions or skipped states under concurrent writes.
  • Upgrade breakage when framework or transitive constraints shift.
  • Orphaned or unreachable states after config changes; the package offers no data migration tooling.
  • Missing audit trail makes incident reconstruction slow and manual.

Ramp-up

  • Low learning curve for Laravel developers: trait plus config, roughly half a day to productivity.
  • The real cost is domain work — designing the state graph, guard rules, and failure semantics — not package mechanics.
  • Onboarding risk is low visibility: engineers will not discover lifecycle behavior without reading package source, so documentation is a hard prerequisite to any adoption.
