Filament Shop Laravel Package

a21ns1g4ts/filament-shop

Filament Shop is a Laravel package that brings shop and e-commerce management into Filament admin panels, helping developers handle catalog, product, and order workflows from one familiar interface. Lightweight and straightforward to integrate.

Technical Evaluation

This is the initial assessment for a21ns1g4ts/filament-shop. The only release signal available is the v0.1.0 changelog, which contains no functional changes — both entries are Dependabot bumps to GitHub Actions (dependabot/fetch-metadata 2.2.0 → 2.3.0, aglipanci/laravel-pint-action 2.4 → 2.5). The v0.1.0 tag therefore marks the first public cut of the codebase rather than a feature milestone, and it gives us no changelog evidence of scope, API surface, or stability commitments.

Architecture fit

  • Package name and namespace indicate a Filament plugin (Laravel + Livewire admin panel) providing shop/commerce capability. Fit is strong only if our admin surface is already Filament-based; otherwise it introduces a second UI paradigm.
  • Unresolved whether the package is admin-panel-only (catalog/order management resources) or also ships storefront/cart/checkout. This single question drives most of the integration estimate.
  • Assumes the host app owns the commerce domain model (products, variants, orders, payments) or adopts the package's migrations wholesale — these are very different architectures with different exit costs.

Integration feasibility

  • Composer-installable Laravel package; integration is straightforward in principle (require, publish config/migrations, register plugin in the Filament panel provider).
  • Feasibility is gated by three unknowns: supported Filament major version, supported Laravel/PHP matrix, and whether migrations are additive or assume a fresh database.
  • At 0.1.0 there is no upgrade path to evaluate; first integration should be treated as a spike, not a commitment.

Technical risk

  • Pre-1.0 API instability (high): no semver guarantees; minor bumps may be breaking.
  • Single-maintainer / bus factor (high): no organizational backing, no security policy, no release cadence evidence. The only PRs in the repo history are bot PRs, which suggests low external contribution and review activity.
  • Changelog opacity (medium): the v0.1.0 notes describe CI plumbing, not product behavior — we cannot diff intent between releases, so every upgrade requires reading source.
  • Supply chain (low–medium): standard Composer exposure; the Dependabot-managed Actions are actually a mildly positive hygiene signal.
  • Domain risk (high): commerce code touches money, tax, and PII. An unproven package in this layer carries disproportionate blast radius.

Key questions

  1. Which Filament major version(s) are supported, and is there a CI matrix proving it?
  2. Admin-only, or does it include storefront, cart, and checkout?
  3. Are payment, tax, shipping, and multi-currency concerns in scope or explicitly delegated to the host app?
  4. What is the migration strategy for existing commerce data, and are migrations reversible?
  5. Test coverage and static analysis baseline; is there a documented security disclosure channel?
  6. License terms and any commercial support intent.
  7. Is the maintainer accepting contributions, and what is the stated stability commitment for 1.0?

Integration Approach

Stack fit

  • Target: PHP 8.1+, Laravel 10/11, Filament v3-era, Livewire + Tailwind. Confirm the host application's Filament version before anything else — a mismatch is a hard stop, not a workaround.
  • Fits cleanly into an existing Filament admin panel as a plugin; fits poorly into Inertia/Vue or Nova-based admin surfaces.

Migration path

  • Greenfield: low friction — adopt the package's schema and resources from day one; acceptable risk if we accept vendor lock-in on the data model.
  • Existing commerce backend: high friction — expect to either map our schema into the package's expectations or fork. Do not plan on running two sources of truth for orders.
  • Establish a fork-and-own trigger point up front (e.g., "if we need >3 upstream patches in a quarter, we fork"), because upstream responsiveness at 0.1.0 is unproven.

Compatibility

  • Pin the exact version ("a21ns1g4ts/filament-shop": "0.1.0") — no caret range while pre-1.0.
  • Maintain our own compatibility matrix covering Laravel, Filament, Livewire, and PHP; the package's CI (per the notes) currently only covers lint/metadata actions, not a version matrix.
  • Validate Filament asset publishing and panel registration in a staging build early; Filament plugin wiring failures surface at boot, not at install.

Sequencing

  1. Week 1 — Read-only spike: clone, read the service provider, migrations, and resources; answer the seven key questions above from source. No host-app changes.
  2. Week 2 — Sandbox install: fresh Laravel + Filament app, install, exercise the resources end to end; capture the schema and any hard-coded assumptions.
  3. Week 3 — Fit decision: extend vs. wrap vs. reject. Produce a written recommendation with an exit plan (how we would remove the dependency).
  4. Only then: pilot in a non-revenue-facing internal tool before any customer-facing commerce path.

Operational Impact

Maintenance

  • Budget ongoing ownership: expect to read source for every upgrade because changelogs are currently CI-oriented. Assume one engineer-day per upgrade until a stable 1.x with real release notes exists.
  • Pin to exact versions and gate upgrades behind a PR that runs our own integration tests, not the package's.
  • Keep a standing fork-ready posture (mirror the repo, track divergence) — cheap insurance for a single-maintainer dependency.

Support

  • Support channel is GitHub issues only; no SLA, no vendor, no documented security process. That is acceptable for internal tooling and unacceptable for a payment-adjacent production path without internal ownership assigned.
  • Identify a named internal owner for the dependency before merge; "the team" is not an owner.

Scaling

  • Filament admin performance scales with query design, not the plugin. Review the package's Eloquent relationships and any list-table queries for N+1 before trusting it on catalogs above ~10k SKUs.
  • If the package includes storefront or cart logic, load-test independently — Livewire round-trips under concurrent checkout traffic are a distinct risk profile from admin browsing.

Failure modes

  • Boot failure after upgrade — Filament plugin API drift breaks the admin panel at deploy. Mitigate with exact pins and a staging boot check in CI.
  • Migration collision — published migrations conflict with host schema or are non-reversible. Mitigate by reviewing every migration before running in production and testing rollback.
  • Silent abandonment — no releases for 6+ months. Mitigate with the fork trigger and a documented exit plan.
  • Domain correctness drift — rounding, tax, or currency logic diverges from accounting expectations. Mitigate with reconciliation tests against our finance source of truth.
  • Security exposure — unpatched PII/payment surface with no disclosure channel. Mitigate by scoping the package away from raw payment data if possible.

Ramp-up

  • Engineers familiar with Filament and Livewire: ~2–3 days to productive contribution on the package internals.
  • Without Filament experience: budget 1–2 weeks, since debugging spans the plugin, panel provider, and Livewire lifecycle simultaneously.
  • Document the schema and plugin registration points in our own repo — the package's docs are unverified at 0.1.0 and should not be treated as the onboarding artifact.
