Baum Laravel Package

1001menus/baum

Baum is a Laravel nested set package for hierarchical data such as menus and categories. It offers an Eloquent model with efficient tree queries, node movement, reordering, and ancestor/descendant helpers for building and maintaining nested structures.

Product Decisions This Supports

  • Hierarchy as a first-class domain concept. Nested Set (left/right bounds) is the right underlying model when the product needs trees: category taxonomies, navigation menus, CMS page structures, org charts, folder/document hierarchies, threaded comments, permission trees. The decision this supports is "do we commit to a tree-shaped schema now, or model it as flat rows and reconcile later?" That is expensive to reverse.
  • Build vs. buy vs. borrow. This is a borrow, not a buy. The real decision isn't "should we pay for tree support" — it's "do we adopt a maintained community library, or own this fork?" With zero stars and zero dependents, treat 1001menus/baum as an internal asset with an implicit maintenance tax, not as third-party infrastructure.
  • Read/write trade-off scoping. Nested Set makes subtree reads cheap (single indexed range query, no recursion) and writes expensive (node moves rewrite bounds across rows). This directly informs feature prioritization: it's a strong fit for read-heavy surfaces (public navigation, catalog browsing, breadcrumbs, sitemaps) and a poor fit for high-churn ones (live drag-and-drop reordering, real-time comment threads, bulk imports).
  • Roadmap sequencing. Adopting this pattern now lets you defer a closure table, recursive CTE, or graph database investment. It buys 12–24 months of runway for taxonomy/navigation features at near-zero infrastructure cost.
  • Vendor-risk posture. Zero stars, zero dependents, Bitbucket-hosted, score 0. This is almost certainly a private org fork. That's a legitimate decision input: it means no external security review, no issue triage, no documented upgrade path — plan for internal ownership or don't adopt.
  • Reuse in existing codebases. If a product already ships this fork, the PM decision is stabilization and abstraction, not replacement. If it's greenfield, the decision is to standardize on a maintained alternative.

When to Consider This Package

Adopt when:

  • You are already inside the 1001menus codebase and this fork is the incumbent — replacing it is scope you probably don't need to fund.
  • The stack is Laravel/Eloquent and the data is genuinely tree-shaped (single parent per node).
  • Read volume substantially exceeds write volume: menu rendering, category traversal, subtree exports, admin browsing.
  • Blast radius is contained — internal admin tooling, CMS navigation, back-office catalogs — where a stalled dependency is survivable.
  • You have (or will assign) an owner who can carry the fork: PHP/Laravel version bumps, security patches, test coverage.

Look elsewhere when:

  • Greenfield project. Prefer an actively maintained, Laravel-native alternative (e.g. kalnoy/nestedset) or a recursive-CTE approach (staudenmeir/laravel-adjacency-list). Zero dependents means no ecosystem validation — you'd be the first adopter of a fork with no upstream.
  • Critical path with no maintenance capacity. A fork you can't own is technical debt with a scheduled interest payment. If nobody signs up to maintain it, don't put it under checkout, entitlements, or anything customer-facing at scale.
  • High write concurrency. Nested Set moves rewrite sibling ranges; concurrent reordering contends. Adjacency list or closure table handles churn better.
  • Multi-parent / DAG semantics. Nested Set is strictly a tree. If a node can live in two categories, the model is wrong — stop and pick a different structure.
  • Shallow, bounded trees. Two or three fixed levels are fine as parent_id plus a simple recursive query. Nested Set's complexity isn't earning its keep.
  • Unverified framework compatibility. Old Baum forks predate PHP 8.2 / Laravel 10–11. If a spike doesn't confirm current-version support and passing tests, that's disqualifying — not a "we'll patch it later."

How to Pitch It (Stakeholders)

To executives: This is a data-modeling pattern, not a product or a purchase. It lets us ship hierarchical features — nested navigation, category trees, page structures — with simple, fast queries instead of recursive ones, at zero licensing cost. The caveat is ownership: the specific artifact here is an internal fork with no community behind it, so the cost is our engineering time, not a license fee. The ask is small (a short spike to confirm framework compatibility), and the payoff is deferring a much larger storage-layer investment.

To engineering: Nested Set gives us O(1)-ish subtree reads via indexed left/right bounds, with writes paying the cost on node moves. Fit it to read-heavy surfaces; don't put it under high-churn reordering. On this specific package: zero stars, zero dependents, Bitbucket, no upstream — assume we own it outright. Before committing, run a spike to verify PHP/Laravel version support, test coverage, and move-node correctness. Regardless of outcome, put the tree behind a repository/service boundary so a later swap to a maintained library is a sprint, not a quarter.
